It should (if working right) take just 15 seconds to raise full, check the bags and the inside of of the bonnet too or leaks (some are so small you'll never hear them) and then raise to wading height about 5 to 8 seconds for that, dropping should again be no more than about 10 seconds (and it will give a little shimmy as it levels out, but that’s normal) when you double lock it listen out for any noises and investigate, and the dead lock should kick in after about 30 ish seconds (you will here it lock again, check both keys are working (and you should have a non electronic master key too) if you don’t get all 3, be weary its easy to steal a car with a key that’s left on your drive, and he has you address etc (trusting sole ant I? LOL)

check for ware on your belt, cheap to replace a pig to put on (IF you can get hold of a mechanics stethoscope) check all the front end, listen to the bearings on the water pump air con etc, rust on the drop down tail gate, lift the plastic flap up and look (its electronic corrosion) when you start the engine, open the bonnet first feel the engine, is it hot or cold, ideally you want it stone cold, so you know how it starts, its a very old trick to warm an engine up when someone comes around to buy) there’s so much to look out for...... just take your time going round it and do the obvious, look at oil take the cap off smell it (any foam white gunk?) if the oil is new suspect a leak from the head (a new oil change could mean he is hiding a problem) also check the water as well use your nose an smell it, check the boot take the tyre out and look around the pan (a shunt up the backside will be obvious they hardly spend time fixing things like that because you cant see it and you’ll get water ingress in it too)
Like I say it too much to mention, take a mate with you with some knowledge of cars if you can, what you don’t spot he might, do it in bright day light too (never buy a car and look it over in the dark) Again take your time ½ an hour going around it will save you a lot of ££

Oh yea get rid f the bloody Merc !!! lol

hi thanks for the reply dopey all the points noted ....are the wheels standard on this ...if not will it effect the rolling speedometer ... I need it to tow my caravan but not to bothered about the air suspension as a extra ...I may be better finding one without ?.... the merc may be on its way out the door .... or may not.... am I right in thinking this is a P38 and with the air suspension how do they go on for towing ...... a mate of mine has been into 4x4 for a long time ... but he's the kind of guy who will buy one then spend the next 2 years repairing it ...covered in oil and carrying bits of it around showing various scrap dealer in hope of finding the part ..I need it for towing ,shopping , school run etc ...... any independents in the Manchester area
