Check the earth point on the front inner wing, just behind the battery. Take the bolt off, remove any paint and rust and refix.

Could it be that when you " do something else" your hearing goes, a common sign of hypertension, heart problems or just concentrating hard. If I concentrate really hard I cant hear doris map reading all the way from zeebruge to w germany via france holland belgium west germany. Not necassarily in that order or only once each, a long long night:doh:

If the radio does not switch off but you are losing sound intermittently then you may have a loudspeaker output problem. Do you have the same problem when playing a tape/cd? if not then a lose aerial/amp connection may be.

do you think it may have something to do with my sunroof leaking the other day?? seems to only happen in the damp or cold, so Im wondering if its water in the electrics? Ill try it with a CD tomorrow and see what happens!

More info is always good, because of the leaking sunroof there will be condensation on the underside of the roof and the aerial amplifer is mounted in the void above the headlining so may be affected by the dampness in that area, it's just a thought.
