55 plate freelander hard back
Just had the squib ring clock replaced as that’s all it failed the MOT on.
However when I collected it from the auto electrician the radio/CD has gained a fault. Turn it on, it’s at zero volume, then turn the sound up, radio works and numbers in the display increase. Immediately the number and the volume fall back to zero

Any help gratefully received

Can I be the first to ask what a squib ring clock is?!? I'd take it back to the person that apparently put the fault on!

It’s the plastic part in the centre of the street in wheel, LR no longer make it, so we have to rely on eBay
Of they say, can’t be anything to do with us!

Ok so that rotary electrical device carries the signals for the volume controls to the radio!! Advise them of this and if it worked before you took it to them take it back and request a repair!! It is actually known as a clock spring.

No volume control on the steering wheel, so not sure how the two are connected

The switches may not be there, but these 'options' are often wired in - just the switches missing. So if there's a problem with the clock spring it could be sending current down the track that the volume buttons use.

I'm not sure exactly how it works - but if everything else is working, you could possibly pull the wire from the spring that feeds to the radio (or possibly into some CCU that sends a network message to the radio).

I would be concerned if there is a problem with the spring though as the airbag will also be activated by it - so if its faulty, the bag might not go off in an accident or might go off for no reason.

If the volume worked before the repair work then it's a no brainer. As GG says above the wiring is likely to be connected to the radio even if your car doesn't have controls on the steering wheel.

It sounds like the radio is having its volume pulled down all the time. This was caused by whoever changed the rotary coupler (clock spring). All the wiring for the steering wheel volume controls are fitted at the factory. The only thing missing was the actual wheel switches. So I suspect the wheel wiring (horn?) has been plugged into the radio volume connection on the clock spring, pulling the volume down all the time.

Ah, I think you’re right.
I had another look at it last night. The radio is live even when the ignition is off and the key removed.

Sounds like they have mucked up on the wiring big time. Return it and ask them to put it right!! If necessary a photo copy of the Haynes circuit diagram will show the volume connected to the clock spring.
