Try a hard reset. Fitting a new stereo isn't straightforward.

How do I go about doing a hard reset?
Remove the key and put it in your pocket.
Disconnect both positive and negative battery terminals then hold them together for 10 seconds. This will discharge all the capacitors in the various modules, cleaning the system to start up fresh. Then connect the positive terminal to the battery and tighten correctly. Then connect the negative by slapping it straight down, as you're trying to eliminate sparks on connection, then tighten that terminal correctly.
The windows will need resetting (instructions in the owners handbook) and the clock on the stereo will need setting. With luck you're problem with the stereo will go away. If not a diagnostic will be needed to identify the module at fault.

I think Nodge was referring to a FL2. FL1 is much simpler and if it won't switch off then it is likely to be a broken switch in the radio itself. Simplest is a replacement unit.

Ah yes I was thinking FL2. It a Visteon unit which comes in single or 6 CD guise. They're not normally that expensive on ebay so keep looking, but make sure a replacement comes with the important code.
On the plus side, you can get adapters that allow for a standard single DIN or double DIN unit to replace the factory one. This way you can get more modern features like BT, DAB and navigation if budget allows.

Cheers nodge I should have said it was freelander 1
I may just change for a double din unit more upto date but thanks anyway for your help
