Radiator fan

maybe on some other modells but on a D2 is used by the engine management for additional cooling if the coolant temp exceeds 110*C regardless of the aircon, and that's the case when it will run all the time on overheat fault code which must be erased to stop it(what i thought in my first answer as the OP spoke about a switch which is not the case for the viscous fan)

Cheers sierrafery, I think you are probably correct. I've heard the fan and had a look and seen the other one spinning so assumed it was that, but I probably can't see the air con fan?

If you hear a fan running only with ignition on 2 remove relay R4 to rule it out, if it will stop then that's it, you can see the electric fan through the front grille

Just had a look. If the ignition is on only then the fan at the front is not running. As soon as the engine is started the front fan runs and that is the one I can now hear I'm sure.

This is what happens with a D1when equipped with a/c according to LR:
Fan timer unit
The thermostatically controlled timer will continue to operate the cooling fans after the air conditioning or ignition is switched off.
When the system temperature is excessive, the fans will operate for 10 minutes to reduce condenser and under bonnet temperature
.

Can't say I have seen my a/c fans operate in the above condition, and on hot days with the engine running and a/c on it's gets HOT under the bonnet going by the hot air blowing out of the nearside wheel arch.
Also it states if the engine temp goes into the red, the a/c will switch off until the temp drops back to normal, but there's no mention of the a/c fans switching on and assisting radiator cooling if the engine cooling system temperature goes into the red.

I thought it's about a Td5 in this thread
