Depends how long it's been in!
Many look the same the first few oil changes 'cos that's when most wear happens (so they say) .. mine looked somewhat like it at 120,000 miles, but it had also had a bit of water in the 'box. Last oil change I did at 132,000 it was almost free of whiskering.

Probably 50k since last change, But didnt see the plug. I guess time dependant as you say.

Yes same as my defender has about that much tbh you ain't gona pull it apart untill it breaks are you. Change oil at correct time and wait for the Big Bang

i usually change the gearbox oil about every 20k and i always have whiskers on the mmagnetic stud. what is the recommended interval for manual box oil change? i change mine that often because the box is not great and the oil comes out black every time

Mine looked exactly the same. The magnet is there to remove all the metallic chips and dust, so i reckon that someone at the engineering department has foreseen the wear... hopefully

Transmission oils (diffs, transfer and gb) i do between 40 and 50 and engine done every 6k. Thanks all for replies.

I do mine, 300Tdi Disco R380 manual, at about 10k, but recently I've changed it twice in 10k due to extra time spent wading and such-like. I change diff oils about every 4k, same reason, and transfer box when I do diffs 'cos it's the same oil!

Blimey read manuel in sure diffs are 24000 or two years whatever sooner you got money to burn with correct breathers shouldn't be water in them and you don't need to drain the whole lot out to check eek

breathers may help but in no way keep water out of axles ,seals are designed to keep oil or grease in not water out ,its very common for oil to be contaminated i check every time after wading and change frequently , a good % of my work comes from people that dont

Did not say not check, oil sits on top of water so a quick release from drain plug would indicate if contaminated once oil has settled ....

it does once settled but you do see evidence on bearings after a very short period of time

I was more concerned at how quick oil was changed 6k 24 big differance if after checking oil is good

Nope, poor as church mice, school caretaker now .. and it's my 'insurance' policy as I green-lane and wade a lot, so I check them every time I get home (mostly!). And yes I have correct breathers, but hub seals etc keep oils in, and little out .. and sometimes I can be in water a long time ..
Sometimes it's longer, sometimes it's shorter, but I have a reasonable supply of very cheap EP90, so not too worried .. in fact my nieces partner gets me it free, or beer money ..
