could it be a water pump?
any idea how much this is gunna cost me :(
cheers
great site btw

Is there smoke/steam from anywhere? Under the bonnet?

Can you see any coolant in the engine bay, running anywhere on the engine maybe?

And is it losing water when it's stood still, engine no running?

jack it up and remove the under tray and with the engine running and up to temperature check all over the engine for signs of a leak, it must be going somewhere.
the coolant reservoir bottle and cap are known points of a leak as they develop cracks.

As you've just bought it maybe its got fresh oil and coolant it in, give it a while for the mayonaise to appear and then take it back if bought from a dealer.

If you can't visibly see the leak, is there anything on your undertray?

Try having a look at the back of the engine, have a feel under the intake manifold where it joins the head.

From a private seller you have no legal comeback unless-they miss described it.

That said the gaylander 1.8 is notorious and people on here can help point you in the right direction.
I'd still phone the seller and moan

i did a gas test on the expansion tank seems its another one with a head gasket gone!
its in the garage now the body of it is in very good nick so i think its worth a few quid spent on it i dunno lol

Hope you get the problem sorted. This seems to happen all too often with these vehicles, and then palmed off to someone else to sort out (search around the net, plenty of threads in other forums with people in the same situation as you).

mines was the same as yours, no white smoke from either the exhaust/under the bonnet, no visual water leaks, oil is nice and black. I'd check the heater matrix and pipes too and from engine/radiator.

When it starts to over-heat? put your heaters on full blast! that will bring the temp down. Still i reckon its headgasket time

'edit' Ooops I mean; if out and about and engine starts to over-heat? put heater on full blast until you get home/garage etc
