well got my son james to start on my engine today, the air filter was really dirty,
took out the crankcase filter, bmw and was nice and clean apart from a lining of oil
replaced the inline turbo filter
then exchanged the maf for another bosch
noticed in the egr hoses etc and very thin film of oil which i assume is quite normal
ive still got a small amount of white smoke if i put it on around 1500 revs,
put it all back together then took it up the road for a spin
by christ what a difference , no smoke out of the exhaust and pulls like a bloody train, smoother, more responsive etc
it started also on the button
fingers crossed i may i have cured the very low mpg
when it warmed up the white smoke had gone but is white smoke extra fuel, injector fault etc, but i imagine it may take a while to settle down

next will be an oil engine and filter change
had a pig of a job getting the old maf out and finding a suitable star bit, as it also had a small peg type in the middle, as mine had 6 sides and the maf screws had 5 sides, got them out and then found 2 x new screws with the torx head
am really pleased with the results and going to pop the hawkeye on it and as per usual i totally forgot to put the analiser on the freelander before i done the mini service but intend to in the week and see what results i get and going to then adjust the synergy box to see how the combustion changes
