quick help please emergncey

fellow member is currently having problems , its a 1997 defender 300tdi

noisy gearbox , no gear selection in high,low, or difflock , apparently the clutch feels normal shes stuck blocking a junction , I think its terminal but is there anything I can pass on to get her moving again? I am not with her I can only help over the phone so bear that in mind

no not even 4th , I suggested that as that puts drive straight through , that would suggest either clutch or output splines?

apparently it slots in but just does nothing , I noticed she had a noisy thrust bearing on the weekend also if that helps

no drive btw bb it seems to go into all gears okay but no drive and no noise

tried difflock also , I belive a tow is now on its way

likely to be the clutch or another problem? I know the gearbox and transfer box are not in good shape. very noisy and a lot of backlash ( drove it myself on weekend) also a lot of oil leaks

when I drained it on the weekend the oil in gearbox was red ( atf ) but had no lubrication at all it was like red water , fresh oil got her home and helped but its broken tonight it seems

red oil would sound ok ,it is thin box is designed to run on it ,what did you refill it with

it had atf in there and that's what it had back in there , the old oil was badly degraded as it had no lubrication at all it was litrally like water coloured red , dosent seem to have ever been changed

refilled with new atf which helped

it must have had enough otherwise it would have come out discoloured and silvery

least I made this one better

it seems like its the clutch that has gone but with the condition of the gearbox and transfer box at 214,000 miles I think they are being replaced also , the sheer amount of metal in there was something to behold

edit: yes a lot of it was silver with lots of metal chunks also in the bottom which I flushed and scraped out with my finger as the magnet was too full to take anymore

I feel her pain. My gearbox is being replaced this week, but mine's only only 80,000 miles!
