Questionable workmanship at an independent land rover garage.

It would appear that the welding is not great to be honest - dog rough in my opinion and certainly not the standard I would expect from a garage when paying that sort of money.

it is rough ,the kind of bodge people do to get it through a test but normally covered with seam sealer or schultz to hide it somewhat so costly for what it is though a proper job would have cost more imo

If the OP is still unhappy after talking to them, regardless of whether it's resolved or not then fair enough.

There's also the possibility that they will go on the offensive rather than it pushing them to sort it out.

I think that's a very sensible approach which is likely to get the best result for everyone concerned. With the best will in the world faulty workmanship does happen and I personally consider the way in which complaints are dealt with to be one of the most important factors when I choose my sub contractors.

A couple of months ago I cocked up a precision TIG welding job because I had a mental blank. The answer for me was to put the job right and then not to charge for all the time spent P*ssing about. I like to think that if I hadn't come clean about it my customer would have given me a chance to rectify things before kicking up a fuss.

That said the welding in those pictures is pretty shocking and is a reminder that many "professionals" these days have no proper training whatsoever but are simply DIY enthusiasts who have decided to make their hobby into a business and now consider themselves "professionals". Very sad.

wow thats well bad,,,wont last a month never mind next mot...who did the mot the question...i mig weld and as in any welding you goto cut back to solid metal

Would you have done the repair to that 'standard' and charged that much for it?

ide be ashamed to let anyone see that never mind take money....ive done a few car jobs but ive tended to say if the hole is about 3 inches square...ive cut back to good metal...end up 4 inches sq...then put a plate 6 inches square...heavy sealant under the plate...pop riveted it in with half a dozen rivets ..tack weld every inch...then fill it in..get back under the car and fibre glass it.....wait till next day and underseal....and underseal the part in car of course

all about the prep

Not me. And not anyone worth the title of Professional. I only wish that I could devote the sort of time to my own cars that I put into my customers' cars. That will have to wait until I retire. If I took good money from people and felt that I hadn't done my best in return then I wouldn't sleep at night. I know others in my trade who take this attitude... I'm definitely not alone in this!

i dont weld as a business i do it cause i need to and to help my mates, the above way i stated is the only way i know..., ive never had to redo any repair...but the pics shown are disgrace...not even put underseal to try and cover up bare steel...so more rust., if they havent sealed the plate...wet feet on the way..more rust.
im def diy welder ..my gear aint fancy...sealey mighty mig gas less...110 amp max...flux wire .9 ml....so you need good metal to start with

armed with those pics....ide go back and firmly say...repair to an acceptable standard or i go trading standards..next ide go to the mot...i wonder if its same place or linked...and asked how the hell they passed that

in fact it reminds me of my welding when i started...welding is ...in mig anyway...amount of heat..v wire feed...and speed of puddle...all 3 need to right...the floor pan isnt even welded at one end

If that area is not structural then there is no reason for your MOT tester to fail it.

That's perfectly adequate, yes. It's not a professional job though because (apart from the uneven bead) it is under cut on the lower edge on the left hand side of the seam in the photo. I'd still pay for that job though because it's quite servicable.

take these to garage and say...that would have been acceptable

iirc there are centres you can take the vehicle to if you think the mot is suspect maybe take it there first and see if they think it should/shouldn't have passed then go back to the garage and tell them what the centre said
