at the moment im trying to get my p38 4.0ltr auto gems controled to run ! got spark fuel etc , now what my question is ; could ( in theory ) the "tangs " have off been taken off the fly wheel and been replaced 180 out , thus sending the wrong signal from the cam sensor and crank sensor , ie it thinks no 6 is no1 i have the older coilpack system 4 banks of 2 using the wasted spark system :confused: im asking this as i bought the car with a dead gearbox im wondering did the previous owner have someone to "repair" the car and they may of taken it off and moved it .
I have had the car running , with difficiulty , i have changed crank sensor, maf, plugs, leads (NEW) checked the resistance on the leads as suggested by eightinavee. admittedly the spark seems weak to me ........... im asking all these questions looking to find the answers before i have take it to a main :Cry::Cry::Cry: dealer and end up being mugged for every last penny. i bought the car with the intention of it being a replacement for my old disco which has been battered so please dont mention running costs as it hasn't run anywhere , but it's still costing ,,,

Unlikely as the drive plate etc. are located with a dowel in the boss on the end of the crank and will only go on in one position. HOWEVER....what if the dowel was lost etc..who knows?????????????????? Perhaps if the crank is turned by hand to TDC with both valves closed on no.1 cyl. the CPS tag should be somewhere close to the sensor.

Comes a point when you need to have a diagnostic done. Changing parts at random is all very well & MIGHT get you there in the end, but at what cost?

your right ratae at what cost do you stop ? i can see what you said about the dowel , j, ive turned it to tdc and the ckp seems there , haven't checked if valves are closed i'll take the cover off to find out . assuming the "large gap" is the "tag" for the ckp

Have you takenthe 1/2 moon plate off and had a look, the tangs are a 36 minus 1 pattern,ie 36 tangs then a gap.Never bothered to see if the gap corresponds with TDC on #1 - had no reason too.A session on Testbook will reveal little if you cant get it to run,(Except live values from the TPS. in this situation anyway.).The MAF etc does not get used till the engine gets above cranking speed. All you need to sart it is the crank sensor really, disconnecting the coolant temp sensor will give a default value - so it should still start on 8.It only takes 1 tang to get badly damaged of the 36 and the TDC start point could be in any of 36 more places than where it should be.
Its where I'd start.

1/2 moon is off , looked at the tangs cannot see anything untoward they all look straight , as you no doubt have read from my earlier scribblings i changed the maf and crank sensor i am very close to changing the coilpacks as i feel the spark is weak but that's my thinking. i shall do as you suggest , fingers crossed.

eightinavee you are my hero:cheer2::cheer2::5bparty::5bparty::5bparty::5bparty: it started first turn okay a little ruff but IT RUNS IT BREATHS I would never have gone down that route thank you very very much andrew j and my misses says thank you she can keep the door closed now and get the bloody house warm

so with the coolant temp sensor connected it's telling the system it's v.cold so pushing more fuel into the system (change cool temp sens ?) so causing flooding i assume , then again if the tps was done for wouldn't this put more fuel in aswell , are the two linked,?. when i had a autologic unit put on thursday the tps was giving a reading of 11% engine not running and only 83% at full throttle (means nothing to me mind)

not a bad idea i think i'll go for a few beers . i've been going around and around with this car i think if i came to a brick wall i'd just start spinning on the spot . in with fuse 11 i think and off into the distance with it . or at least around the back any way
