Question For The Towing Guru's...

Can I legally tow a 110 on a Brian James transporter with a 90?

I presume (I'm on holiday ATM so can't check for sure) that the transporter is plated to carry a 110 as my mate the owner had a RR Sport on it a few months back and it's a 90 hard top 300Tdi if that makes any difference.

What licence have you got?

Passed in '94 so the old towing rules apply

Should think so then, you can tow 3.5 tonnes with the 90, providing the MAM of the trailer is 3.5 tonnes

As far as I know, if the plate on the drawbar says 3500kg, and the combined weight of the trailer and 110 are less than 3500kg you are ok. As long as you don't have a lot of weight in the tow vehicle to put you over the train weight.
I have never towed a 110, but I have several times towed a 109 on ifor trailer, with the vehicle strapped down just in front of the balance point to give a nice noseweight. Towed lovely although fairly slow.

Of course we have only answered the question "can you legally tow"

Whether its safe is another subject. Have you ever towed a heavy trailer before, if not it might be a steep learning curve

I agree, towing heavy trailers can be a dangerous game!

Rather tow a heavy trailer any day

Still I am learning loads, tappets, rules of nine, valves, push rods, head bolts, turbos, intercoolers (I thought that was the radiator ) the list goes on and on.

Actually I'm really enjoying it

Like SueW says, legally you probably can, whether you'll get there safely is a question!

If you tow caravans regularly then I'd suggest it's probably OK. If you don't tow often, or have never towed I'd say bite the bullet and get an experienced mate to do it, or the AA (whoever) ...

I've shifted plenty of motors on transporters but usually using a Disco or VW Crafter LWB. I've also tow regularly including a caravan. I just wasn't sure what the max weight a 90 could tow.

Be careful, I have been on tenterhooks a few times towing things heavier than the tow vehicle it's not a nice experience. Last time was towing a Disco 3 with a disco 2 going down Potter hill towards Melton, I wasn't going that fast but a weave started and as I was going down hill I couldn't do much about it and was sweating on the top line by the time I got to the bottom, then on the uphill side I gave it some gas and that straightened it out.
The salesman that was with me never even noticed.

So what would you guys recommend as the max to tow with a 90? Car trailer with a standard saloon car? Or are we talking an old mini and a bag of crisps?

As ever, it depends ... too many variables to give a single answer that will fit everyone.

If it were my mum driving I'd say don't tow anything ..

If it were an ex truck driver I'd say tow almost anything ..

I've had my Mini Cooper s on a trailer on the back of my 90 and it towed really well just take it steady and I'm sure you'll be fine , if not confident dont do it!

That's a fair comment. I've done a good bit of towing moving cars (under 2000kg) around. It's not something I do for enjoyment but I'm comfortable enough doing it. A 90 is on my short list for a shooting/towing vehicle, I'm just making sure I'm not making things too hard on myself.

What he said, your Landy might be able to tow it, if the driver had no experiance in towing large loads it will be a dangerous game

the variable in this is how good are your brakes on the 90?

If in good working order and your confident go for it, just don't start fish tailing at speed!

Tell you what, that Sankey dunt half tow well does it?

I hardly new it was there all the way back from upt north.

I drive an iveco daily pickup towing a Brian James 3.5t trailer almost every day 45-50k a year

A heavy tow vehicle makes a big difference, I've never been scared no matter what's on the trailer though this was fairly big in the rear view mirror




It's all about balance, you don't want too much weight on the back, strap it down well and if you think it's not right when you're on the move stop and move it

Better 1/2 an hour moving it than 4 hours pulling it out of a ditch
