No that is not correct it is full four wheel drive. Drive is divided equally front and rear. You maybe thinking of the Freelander which is only part time four wheel drive.

I meant that its not got a real diff lock ie a yellow thingy that you press

Yes. Permanent 4WD until you're in the sh!t and then it is 1 wheel spin!

vcu is a center difflock, which means its equivalent to a series in 4wd a defender or disco in diff lock

Yes, from memory I had 2 wheel spin. She was rocking on the raised middle part of the track. As soon as the front right went down the hole the rear left cocked its leg. With hindsight the other thing I missed was the difference between VCU and diff-lock: on diff-lock I used to use very little power and feather the throttle to ease my way out. With the VCU you need to give it some beans to get it to lock up. Different style.

Update
It wasn't the CV or the wheel bearing but was the UJ on rear of front propshaft!
Never even considered that and looked ok when I greased it a while back.
Previously on Discos and Landys the UJ has "tinkled" when on way out but was no warning sounds at all. Guess radio on too loud.

Afraid you cannot check U/Js by just looking at them.
I assume he gave it a good tug.

If the wheels are on the ground with weight on the transmission you can tug and wriggle all you want you won't feel any movement. A front wheel needs to be up to check the front prop and a rear wheel up to check the back one.

Thanks Grrrrrr, sorry I was out early this morning. To answer your query, I'm a tugger,puller and occasionally a slap it side to sider. The latter is usually at the stones to get the drips off.
