Hello All, would someone kindly tell me how to wire in a push button start with a toggle switch for ignition on a Discovery 1 300tdi?
 
Thanks for the reply, only thing is is the guy who seemed to be PM'ing the instructions hasnt been seen since 2015 :eek:

To start with “push button start with a toggle switch” can’t be done, they are different switches.

So to give you a push button function to start the engine instead of moving the ignition key to position three you will need a non-latching push switch and wired in parallel from the brown wire at the existing ignition switch to the white/red wire feeding to the starter relay from fuse 17, so its just a wire overlay. Simples
The operation is with key in the ignition switch at position two, the button is pressed the relay operates and engine will crank and start, allow button to release.
You will still need to remobilise the engine with the fob.

You may also feel that it would be nice to have an illuminated button, some illuminate on press other illuminate to aid location of the button, of course both modes will require an additional power supply.

Sorry, I am a but dumb when coming to wiring in parallel. If I get a non latching switch with say 3 poles on, 1 is for the illumination, what exactly do I do with the other 2. I dont want to go and eff the whole thing up.

You require a minimum of 4 terminals, in and out for the momentary positive feed to the relay, plus positive and earth for the LED .

It still doesn't get over the column lock, which needs to be turned to release it, so while doing that, the key might as well be used to do the whole start process. Retrofitting some off the shelf start button is both unnecessary and pointless IMO.

Having several vehicles with a variety of start processes (keyless with start button, and docking fob with start button, I actually prefer the normal ignition key, as the driver can control what is going on.

Getting over the locked steering isn’t an issue if your able to turn the ignition key 2.
Do owners still turn the steering wheel for the steering to lock when parking up, I certainly don’t just remove the key, get out and lock doors and on my way :)

The only opinion I have on modifications to a vehicle is if the owner thinks is useful the let it be.

My first car was a mini, I fitted a dash full of gages and a rev counter sitting on top, no need to fit push button starter it left the factory fitted with one.
No mods for my RR other a remote central locking alarm and on my disco just a mobile phone kit. The modern cars I’ve had/have come with all the gizmos. :)
