so, i was out with the family yesterday, driving down to rutland and back, the rain was terrible, huge puddles everywhere!
came down one particular road and there was a puddle covering my half of the road, car coming the other way so i couldnt avoid it.
big splash!!!
after hitting the puddle there was a wierd noise from the middle of the car, sort of behind the front seats. i presumed a bit of muck had got where it shouldnt have but it still drove fine.
after about 5 - 10 minutes it stopped. great :D
but then at some lights when seeting off there was 3 loud "clunks" from the middle/back of the car! i stopped and hopped out the car to see if something was loose or wrong underneath (in the pouring rain!) but i couldnt see anything that looked out of place or loose.
it sounded like the exhaust banging against body work but it was fine.
basically what im wondering is could the puddle have damaged the prop shaft or something underneath?
its puzzling me as everything looks fine and feels fine.
any thoughts gents?

well i just crawled under the car and swung on the prop shaft, no movement.
i then clambered under the back end n shoved n pulled on the rear diff and no movement there either. im presuming if the diff mountings were shot there would be movement somewhere!?
looking at the mountings if it was one of those that had failed it would have to be the front mounting because thats the area the noise came from i think.
i hate it when something goes wrong and its not blatently obvious what it is lol
grrrr cars!

he means the rubber ring which is bolted to the back of most VCU's I think you'll find chaps. Its a weighted rubber/damper to ease the wallowing of all that rotating metal mass :)

OK - I've had a look underneath - can't see it. :(

I note you said 'most' - maybe I'm not meant to have one on a 04 model.

Or is this another example of LandRoverisch Schlamperei where the bits you get are decided by a throw of the dice?

Anyone got a pic of this hi-tech part? ;)

Afaik they all should have 'em to damp the vcu!

Right - stupid me - yes I do have that part - I was imagining something quite different somehow.

Going back to the OP's original problem - could that bit really be damaged by a water-splash? Off-roading perhaps has - but a deep puddle?

By the way Freelaner - does your change of name mean you have given up Toxophily? :)

Caio,

Singvogel.

Has the water lifted the exhaust off it's hangers?
Loose exhaust meatal guard?
Loose fool tank guard?
Front centre mount on the rear diff?

good morning gents,
i've not checked back on this thread for some time but thought id better update you all.
i've currently got my freelander up at a local garage to replace a busted brake cylinder.
but the main reason its there it to try and locate a knocking noise im getting from the front/mid section of the car.
i've been doing plenty of reading trying to narrow down what the cause could be and im getting pretty stumped.
the noise occures when going over bumps when the bump causes some kind of sideways movement of something. it does it over say pot holes but not over speed bumps.
im being led towards the IRD BUT it doesnt clonk when applying or coming off the throttle (which ive read is how you know its the IRD) im also not losing any drive to any of the wheels.
so that leaves the VCU. having read up i know they should be replaced every 70,000 miles, my cars done 78,000, so definately due for a change.
i havent ruled out suspension faults but it does it when the bumps are on either side of the car, not just one wheel but all of them, if ya get my meaning.
what i wanna know is, if any of you bright people can shed any light on what it is thats doing it? i know its difficult when ive got the car infront of me, so much more difficult for you guys that cant even see it lol
its driving me bonkers i know that much!
personally, i think its more likely the VCU but can the VCU be on its way out without damaging the IRD?
any helps or advice would be greatly appreciated, thankyou

Is there not an issue with the rear subframe parting company with the chassis mounting that can cause a knocking sound? I think the chassis splits and lets the subframe that holds the diff move when it goes over bumps.
