propshaft nuts & bolts

ok guys normally i'd search but my front prop just failed bigtime:doh: , do i need all new nuts & bolts or can i reuse , secondly does the new prop have to be oriented the same as the old one or will it just do as long as it fits , cheers in advance

never mind on the bolts folks , just priced them up and its not woth the risk of reuseing after a fail , advise still welcome on the alignment tho

If I remember right from reading a thread by busterbus, there's an alignment mark on the props..

let me have a dig for the thread.

is it the prop thats filed or the ujs holding the prop on?

the uj failed on the rear end & the stress has fractured the front uj , twas fun at 30miles per hour but at least i wasnt motoring , crawled under ,took it off at the roadside then drove slowly home in difflock high , have got another one which seems in good order , may have a weight missing as theres a area of rust about an inch and a half sq but the uj's seem smooth with no slack , good job i had some tools in the boot , been out in a mates car and got 8 new nuts and bolts from landranger in middlewich so just a matter of sorting it now

so the prop is ok then?If thats the case just replace the ujs-but dont get britpart-they are shockingly bad.

to be honest the ends are a little chewed from a) the battering the free end got and b) the angle the other one ended up at , is there any good reason not to fit the other other than the chance of a missing weight, as it liiks a little chewed now and the grease nipple on it has been snapped off just below the surface

seen how much they cost?I wouldnt replace it if it could be avoided, although a little bouncing down the macadam might have scuffed it, id be surprised if its mullered it.Not bent or anything?

yes but i got a replacement used one for a fiver , its seems in good order apart from a possible missing weight , the old one could always be rebuilt as a spare yes?

ok guys , another one for you if you would be so kind , i am gonna have to cut 2 of the bolts off as the nut and bolt are chewed into one piece , but the bolts at the transfer box end are put in from behind ( ie the bolts are pointing toward the front with the nuts on the remans of the prop) & there is not enough space to extract the ok bolts as the t-box is in the way , is this as it should be , if so how the hell to i get them out and put the new ones in

I would have thought if the replacement has a weight missing you should get it balanced before you use it

I took the transfer flange out .. Large nut, stupidly tight, once off it pulls out. Might be an idea to get an oil seal 'just in case' ... then put the bolts on before you tighten the nut back up ..

thanks for all the answers guys , one last one tho , if i may , is there any reason i cant bang the bolts through the other way if there is clearance and no obvious fouling issue.
only it will save me mucho time sweat and money . ta muchly

Cheers chaps , all done now for the time being anyway , managed to get a lend of a snapon cordless impact gun , wonderfull bit of kit , wazzed that big nut straight off , have put the second hand prop on as on closer inspection the old one had a BIG chunk knocked out of the end where the uj's pass through, thanks for all the advice
