... finally! Been driving without a front propshaft for a couple weeks now. :(

Was quite surprised to see it came with the UJ's already fitted, I'd ordered two with it and thought I had to assemble it myself! Was kind of looking forward to it, actually. No worries, some spare UJ's will come in handy I'm sure.

You might find that the uj's in your new shaft are cheap and nasty ones if it was from one of the low price places like paddocks. You might need the spare ones sooner than you think. Make sure you use hardy spicer ones.

The "clunk" was from your transfer box.

how do you work that one out?

clunk there - change propshaft - clunk gone - ergo "must be transfer box"

Funny clunk was while the front prop was off and running in diff lock so what he was hearing was the play in the mecahnical diff lock gubbins.
Fit the new prop and now both output flanges have some resistance and diff lock not engaged the play is not an issue.
When my front prop UJs were on their way out I also took it off and ran for a few days without it. Had the same issues. Replaced all UJs and refitted the props - now no clunk but I know the play is still there in the xfer box.

To add some oil to the fire....

The clunk was there at first when I bought the car. I noticed it mostly when pressing the clutch down to change gears. I figured it was due to the front UJ's but didn't get time to check.

When the front propshaft fell off and I drove in diff lock, the clunk stayed (other noises went though). Obviously not the front UJ's. :( From other posts I'd read I was thinking it was in the transfer box or maybe the a-frame ball joint.

Replaced the front propshaft, clunk gone!

I've been trying to work out what it could have been... at the moment I'm thinking I might have actually been hearing different sounds and lumping them together, so diagnosis might be tough.

The only sound now (that I can hear over the motor) is a rattling in the back that I heard this morning when idling (but not in motion), but I'm 99% sure it's my hi-lift jack rattling against the floor.

The side windows do rattle, but I know that sound now... have to put something in there to stop them moving around.

When it stops pouring bucket'o'rain here I'm going to do exactly what you suggested, walk around and listen for the rattle.

The way to prove it is your xfer box is to take the rear prop off and go for a short drive with diff lock engaged. If it still clunks (my guess is it will) then its the xfer box. If it dont them its your rear diff or A frame ball joint.

Thanks for the hint.

I got a new rear propshaft at the same time as I got the front... figured I'd replace it soon anyways, that way I know it's good and the UJ's won't give me a massive failure anytime soon (replacements for both front and rear are Hardy Spicer). I'll do that test when I remove the old shaft, but that will likely need to wait a month or so (going away for 2 weeks, for one thing!).

If it's the xfer box, does that mean it's shot?
