those dam monkeys at the stealership have struck again!.
while i had my 2003 freelander up oon the ramps i noticed the gator (boot) had failed on the propshaft leaving the gearbox to the viscus joint. (its the one gearbox end)

ok, so i phoned the local stealership and they quoted nearly 300 notes for a new propshaft as you cant get a replacment gator. , so i phoned another, and another, and they all said the same thing, finnally i phoned exeter and the have ordered me one for 15 quid. but i really dont think the guy knew what i was on about.

i had to phone round because i snapped a stud off about 2 months ago and was quoted nearlt 150 quid for a new rear hub , phoned another, same price, )apparently the studs cant be removed), phoned taunton and the got me 10 new studs for £1.20 each, poped the hub, tap tap tap job done in an hour. so you cant trust these guys.

Anyway........................

apart from getting a universal gator, LR must do a replacment part. your thoughts?

There is a rubber glue that repairs divers dry suits and the like, dear £££ though at around £35 a tube.

Cats Eyes had a simialr problem only the pin/roller bearings in the CV joint had worn due to lack of grease.

The part is non-servicable so big money for the front part of the shaft.

well i'll see if matford landrover have ordered me the rite bit, but i'm expecting to drive in and them to hand me a replacment demister knob and then try telling me that "must have been what i ordered, else why would thay have ordered it"

do they onby employ monkeys at these places. i'm still waiting for dorchester to get me the rite replacment key and fob, its been 2 months allready.

Matford only seem interested in selling a vehicle not helping once its left the for-court.They employe cheap grease monkeys who try to follow what it says in a manual and then charge proffesional rates.I wonder if its the same in the factory that puts our landrovers together(that would explain alot)

Practically none of the people employed in car factories are in SKILLED jobs.
And most of the work is done by machines anyway.

LandRovers and real SAAB cars were designed to be built by human hands from end to end, and so it follows they are easy to work on afterwards.

Almost all modern cars are designed to be made by robots, and very little thought (usually none) is given to repairing them later.

This is why so many LandRovers are still running. In theory most of them could be running forever, as long as Paddocks and Craddocks stay in business.

what exactly are you getting me to order tiny?
is this the rite part code for what i need, or is it some random part code which will end up with me asking the parts man to order me a replacment Range Rover vouge TDV6 with a cream interior and girly pink metalic paint job?

tiny, i like your style. i bet they'll try telling me it discontinued. there are a few websites that are flogging them, so we'll see what the stealership wants for it.

This should provide you with everything you need to renew the front joint and gaitor...by memory i think it retails around £60 at the main stealership.:)

well, the bit they ordered was for a front CV joint, tw@ts!
so i quoted your part number and the kit has been discontinued. I'm really thinking of calling LRHQ and asking them to pop outside, then we'll lynch them mob handed. this is stupid, somewhere there must be a big box of these. what we need is to befriend someone in a LR parts warehouse, then we'll all be kept men on here.

i did find a online store that are selling the kit so i may buy 2 of them. Mastora - Land Rover Parts & Accessories

as anyone used them before?

discontinued? Yeah right - I got one last year (unless they only stopped em recently??)
Never used the folks on the link but if they have em then I think I would be clicking "buy" and paying my money.
Rest safe in the knowledge that the main stealership aint getting a penny out of it - that should teach em!

ah, the monkey wasnt lying. he was at his little desk for 10 or so minutes asking where i got the part code because he couldnt find it. bla bla bla.
the he opened some computer programs that was the equilivent of taking a old book from a shelf, opening it and plowing the dust out, just to fint the big words OBSOLETE.

oh well, i've ordered one from offline, so we'll see how that go's.

cheers for all your help guys.

I reckon that looks like an easy enough DIY fix using a suitable CV joint gaiter.
The advantage here is that this joint never turns the steep angles that a CV joint needs to when steering.
That would mean a DIY fix of any quality would probably stay put.
