Problems... help?

Howdy all

My heater matrix has bust on my 1994 300tdi Defender, it's loosing coolant at an alarming rate down front left wheel arch and into foot well :eek::( Is it possible to buy complete new box housing including everything? Or you guys think I should just get a new matrix? Those rivet nuts look difficult to drill out and replace especially without a rivet gun thingy :eek:

Also I cross axled my Landy and couldn't drive out of it despite having diff lock engaged and also ARB lock engaged on rear axle. :confused: It wasn't particularly difficult cross axle but surely my setup should have no problems with that. What checks can I do to make sure diff lock is working properly and same for ARB rear locker.

Any help or ideas please?

replace matrix not a bad job small rivets,jack front wheel up and turn it in and out of lock should lock when diff lock engaged ,rear jack one wheel up will turn until diff lock engaged

True, they do my last defender was puma 110 xs sw it was comfy and very warm in winter and very cool in summer. Is it an easy fit then if the whole thing is bigger?

Will try the jacking thingy majiggy and report back, should have known this tbh so simple :doh:
 
To check centre difflock is working , apply handbrake jack up 1 front wheel and try and rotate. If it does then difflock not engaged. To check rear jack up whole rear axle and try and rotate wheel, if it rotates one way and other wheel goes opposite direction , difflock not working , it should not be possible to rotate either wheel
 
Ok so centre difflock is working fine, even though light on dash isn't. What amount of play should be acceptable when turning wheel before it locks? Front wheel goes round about 1/4 turn before diff lock stops it and therefore half a wheel turn back in opposite direction before wheel stops turning. On rear wheel less then 1/8 turn either way with diff lock.

I have found out that my ARB rear air locker isn't working. Compressor works and switch lights work but no actual locking of the rear diff. How do I fix this? What to check to find out source of problem? Also should I be able to hear anything as it locks the rear diff? Any help is appreciated :)
 
well you got play in front axle,prop,diff ,cv,drive member etc how are you checking rear one wheel up out of gear will turn unlocked wont locked ,arb uses slip rings to transfer air pressure these are only o rings and do fail letting air escape rather than engaging diff dog to lock

One wheel up out of gear turns, and with the centre diff locked it doesn't turn (well about 1/8 of a turn before the wheel stops)
 
Ok, so my new heater matrix has just arrived (10 mins ago) and so I will try to fit it tonight... I don't have a drill or a riviter gun thingy... will this be a problem??? Can I do the replacement without those tools?
 
Opened the box to discover it doesn't really look like a new part to me... Rusty in places, got two big holes which look like a screwdriver has stabbed at the fins of the heater matrix. Not impressed... will give Famous Four a ring now and feedback on here.
 
They said they want to see photos and then they will decide whether I get a replacement or a discount off this one. Might try and get me some free parts instead
 
I've attached photos of the 'new' heater matrix for you guys can all see. They phoned me up this morning to let me know I'd be getting a £15 refund on my order :)
