problem with high/low p38

Im new to r/r, ive read the manual about selecting high/low gears but all i get is the dash switch and light on the console flash then go off, am i doing something wrong or do i have a problem?
 
huh, does it go into gear? will it run in high or low, i assume you are stationary when selecting hi/low? if there is no drive check fuse 11 under drivers seat is out? top right of fuse board!
 
check if the fuse is gone, if so replace it. If it is ok, there is a chance the small wiper motor which engages the hi/lo box has given up. Look at this, see if any movement when trying to switch ranges. Also check the connections on the hi/lo ecu box, located under passenger seat. If the motor has gone, there is a chance that the ecu has fused itself or even burnt out trying to engage this motor, if so this is expensive!!

do you really need lo ratio. If u aint going proper off roading, u wont need it. I have a 95 2.5 diesel, and have pulled three ton of stone in a trailer in high gear no probs, even drove 200 miles to the west of ireland last month with a 25ft fishing boat.......hardly noticed it was there. :)
 
fuse 11 puts the transfer box in neutral, so i wondered if you had put the fuse in thinking one was missing? its used for towing so you dont shag the tranny box when pulling it onto trailers or to garages on 4 wheels! i would assume it would cause issues with drive!!
 
Thanks gav, your right... id dont need hi/lo as i dont offroad but i do tow a lot, im a caravan trader i towed a caravan in a couple of days ago that was around 1700kgs and it ****ed it, i bought a 4.6 a few weeks agop but never intended on keeping it because of running costs, i was dubious about buying a diesel many people had told me the dervs are way under powered but i have to disagree or at least the one ive got is like **** off a stick.
