Problem fitting clutch slave cylinder

After changing the clutch and fitting gearbox I decided to fit new clutch slave cylinder. The front output flange on transfer box is now turning freely as if the clutch is released. I haven't connected hydraulic line yet.
What does this signify?
What might I have done wrong?

It took quite a bit of pressure to get slave cylinder into position.

What an idiot I am - it was in neutral.

Yet another problem - I was expecting fluid to come out when I disconnected the ld cylinder but nothing.

is res full or has it leak out below the clutch level

Reservoir is full but we did try to bleed it the other day. Trying to reverse bleed it now but spending ages pumping the oil can to little effect.

Given up on reverse bleeding and I am now wondering if we may have pinched the pipe with the bell-housing. How much of a job is it to replace the pipe?
