Hi. My 2015 Defender 110 XS, which has only 47,000 miles on the clock, has been losing clutch fluid for a year, with no visible leak in master cylinder or pipework. I've topped up 6 monthly, then 3 monthly, now fortnightly so it needs sorting. On my older defenders this was always a cheap and easy job, so I'm dismayed to find that newer vehicles hide the slave cylinder in the bell housing, and that there is no longer a wading plug but a sealed bell housing so you can't even confirm that it is definitely leaking.

The L/R dealer has quoted £1500 labour, plus parts- new slave cylinder and possibly clutch if damaged by hydraulic fluid sloshing around in the bell housing, plus VAT, so realistically looking at a bill of £2000-3000. To add insult to injury, before starting work, they insist on having the vehicle for a £216 diagnostic session to confirm what I've just told them.

Knowing Defenders, mine can't be the only one, so I'm interested if anyone else has experience of this.

I'm in Bedfordshire and looking for a slightly cheaper way forward. Can anyone recommend a L/R specialist that they would trust with this work?

There is a small penetration right at the bottom of the bell housing at the junction with the engine block. Any clutch fluid will be seen there.
I have doubts that a diagnostic session will confirm anything as I don't believe the clutch hydraulics are monitored by the ECU's. I have a workshop manual with the fault code lists so will check that later and see if I am correct. Main dealer prices . Definitely look for a Land Rover specialist but make sure only top quality branded or genuine parts are fitted, if it was mine (which has similar milage) I would change the clutch as a matter of course even if it was still ok, while the gear box is out.

I had exactly the same issue on my defender 110 XS, I had it done and would recommend Peter Cripps at Ravensthorpe service station NN68EH. I had a new clutch installed at the time too. 49000 miles.
