Probably a very stupid question about Tyres

Ok I appologies in advance for my stupidity.
My disco is currently fitted with 255/65/16r tyres on standard disco alloys. Can i fit a different width tyre than what is fitted for example, 225/70/16?
or does the new tyre have to be the same width as my old ones?

assumin its a disco 1 the standard tyres are 205/85/16 or 235. both on the standard steel or alloy rims. all 5 tyres should be the same size.
