what is the general view on pre drilled discs please

read mixed views , some say there not good due to gettting stones etc caught up on them , others saying there very good , seeing the disco is a heavy motor keeping the brakes cool

as there's so many disco owners on here wondered what u guys thought please

mine are the standard vented discs and in the spring going to renew discs and pads all round

pre drilled or not is the question, lol

thks as always

Drilled / slotted / dimpled ?
I wouldn't bother on a 4x4 - especially if you off road. You will end up with crap in the slots which will destroy the disc.
We run solid discs on our track car - they last far longer and don't warp and crack like the drilled and slotted discs do.
I run dimpled discs on my Audi, but the performance is identical to the solids - manufacturers say they are less prone to cracking and dissipate water quicker. Debatable!

Save your money and buy a decent set of pads instead - you will definitely feel a difference when it comes to pad compound....discs not so much!

I find it really hard to get my head around the idea of drilled brake discs, if the idea of improved braking efficiency is based on friction surface area, what gain comes from reducing surface area by drilling holes, surely a solid disc has got to be a more effective device.
I know there are probably many high performance vehicles with drilled discs, but I just do not understand why, ventilated discs, i.e. radial slots between two disc surfaces I understand, the impellor action gives good air circulation/cooling.
I thought the answer to better braking is disc and pad material technologies and quality.
Could it be just as @wammers says, they look more impressive at the "pose" sessions.

Basically, bar vented discs, which are a good idea... its all snake oil...

explained reasonably well here:-

:)

Just use decent pads on decent discs - and only replace them when they need replacing ;)

Not needed. They will look quite pretty with your painted calipers on McDonald's car park though. :D

What Ive seen of McDonald's they don't have carparks, not that I would take my car or disco there anyway if they had, both have red calipers :)

They do around here. Strangely enough it's where their customers park their cars. Favourite haunt of Kevs with Corsa's. Your photo illustrates perfectly the only use they actually are fitted to a car. They compliment the painted calipers. :D

Cheese graters for your pads!

cheers guys, that's what i thought

will buy some oem ventilated discs are per what's already fitted

can see a lip on the discs and for the sake of it might as well replace the lot

looking online , can get an oem set all round and pads for around £200 quid, which i think is very good and wouldn't ever buy cheap brake items

normally painted my calipers black to keep them in good condition with hammerite and not for cosmetic

must admit they do look good painted red though , lol

am i right in saying the brakes are delphi oem

how about pads , are there ones better than the oem would u say plse

thks again

Just fit OEM, you can use Brillo pads they will keep your new discs clean, but stopping maybe a problem. :D:D

Measure the thickness, and then you know for a FACT how much life there is left. :)

thks, can give them a far better inspection in the spring when i get all the wheels off

can see where someone has allowed the pads to wear right down in the past , some small ridges etc

A "cheapo" set of digital calipers ( <£15 ) off the usual bay of evil could save you some money - or possibly something more important....:)

When we got SWMBO a D1 - the rear discs looked a bit "iffy" - pretty corroded - so they were going in the bin anyway..... when I measured them - the edge was, ahem, a bit less than the minimum :eek:

Agree 100%. I run drilled and grooved on my hooligan wagon, but on the Defender ? No point at all.

i always thought they were design for performance , not trying to stop something that weighs nearly the same as a baby elephant like mine, lol

just hope the handbrake shoes are ok and don't have to replace them , lol

oops , they done well then , lol

i bought some digital calipers from halfords a while back, think it was only around £25 and well worth the money

Designed to keep glaze off the pads (grooves) which also aids cooling, drilled is for cooling.

Asking for trouble off-roading with them.

that's what i thought ref grooves etc, with them collecting mud , etc

seen some convert there's to bigger v8 discs but won't bother, will just buy some oem ventilated discs

have been reading a lot of the materials used in the modern pads and how they've improved

could u imagine owning a car that had ceramic discs on them, gulp

once saw an old neighbour fit new discs on his car and then cleaned them with wd40 , did go over to him with some brake cleaner

best one was when he put a kettle of boiling water on his windscreen to clear ice, outstanding that was, autoglass was there in the afternoon , lol
