Hi need some help please, about 2 weeks ago i was driving the length of the country in my TD4 when i heard this noise coming from the front drivers side (it sounded like salt been poured on to paper or travelling over gravel) but no problem then tonight i drove away from my house and the same sound but this time the battery light came on and my power steering had gone has any one any ideas please as i am sick of forking money out.

Thanks :(

Are you sure it's just the power steering? Battery light coming on sounds like the serpentine/fan/auxiliary belt has gone .. if a Freelander has one?!?!

OK, so check that the fan belt or auxiliary (power steering) belt is still there ... I don't know Freelanders, but most PS pumps are driven from the fan/serpentine/auxiliary belt, so if it snaps then there's no power steering .. the battery light suggests this as a probable cause 'cos the alternator might also be run off the same belt ...

Hi, A search re:'TD4 ancillary belt' should get good results.

Also:
Change the aircon drive belt also to avoid having to remove the ancillary belt again in the future.

Ensure the vehicle is well supported on an axle stand.

Obtain the longest 24mm combination spanner available, ours is extended further with scaffold tube as the tensioner requires considerable torque to unwind sufficiently.

Clean the spanner and tensioner bolt head of oil etc to avoid slipping off.

Have a simple sketch of the belt routing to refer to.

Like this pic.......

It looks quite different when the belt is off and the tensioner pully moves across.
