Well, went to drive off in my disco 4 and steering all lumpy and noisy. Was fine day before when I parked it up. Definite fluid loss, stain on drive to prove it! Into my local Indy for diagnosis, and wham. Steering box, pump and lines are corroded. Lines probably strained due to lower suspension arm bush wear too!! Not my day, going to cost me the best part of a small hatchback, but this machine is awesome..... am I in denial lol

Best motor on the market and it's a big heavy brute too.

Money is nothing compared to the joy of floating on air and the boost of power when you plant your foot to the floor.

I would be utterly amazed if the pump/rack and the flex lines were all corroded beyone repair, shagged bushes will make zero difference to any of the mechanical steering components.
You can see the ends of the rack simply by lifting the suspension to off road height and looking through the wheel arch, they are literally right in front of you.

My rack has been sweating/weeping for about 4 years and used about half a cup of oil in all that time.

I would defo get a second opinion.

Hi again, just to complete my initial post. The power steering fluid loss was partial, but enough to disrupt the steering. I took it to my trusted Indy and they had a look. When we looked underneath the front suspension arm bushes had worn, and this had triggered a stretching type wear on the steering rack. As I bought the car in April this condition must have been occurring for so while. In effect poor servicing or observation. Anyway, no good moaning, need to fix it. Easy fix new rack new suspension arms coscgetting bushes out and in, in situ not easy, then 4 wheel alignment etc. Job done. Not as expensive as first thought, but I did choose to renew everything whilst in there like reservoir, pipe work etc etc. She now drives great for sure.
