Power steering failure.

Hi, just bought a 2005 freelander 1 (privately) Driving it home I lost all power steering fluid. Seller will help with cost, so not as much of a problem. Local garage says the steering rack has failed, but looking under at it, the rack seems dry. The near side of the engine and battery are soaked in fluid however.

Whilst not a mechanic, I suspect a pipe has failed? Has anyone had any experience of this please?

The pipes on the rack are known to rust though, and can spray the fluid everywhere.

Thanks, I guess the engine bay has been further rust proofed!

Pipes rot as above, also I have seen Union on actual rack where pipe screws in fail due to rust. Hard to tell which has failed when soaked in fluid!!
