This is a strange one...

I have a 1986 110 ffr 2.5 N/A, and i have a strange problem. She has two(at least) moods, one slow and one normal. On the way to my mates house she would happily sit at 100 kmph(this is fast mood). We did a complete service, including adjusting the tappets which were a little out, but she had a head gasket/skim some months before so was understandably in need of adjustment.
We took it for a test drive, and she was still in fast mood, pulling up inclines etc.
Afterwards when the service was finished, on the way home she goes into slow mood. It is never as i a travelling, it will always be in one or the other from the start. I have no idea where to start ?

bloody hell.. now mine does it. Probably did all along, but only just noticed. Was pig slow yesterday on the way home. Then tonight it was much more sprightly.

Maybe something to with the air temp, bloomin cold last night.

Going to replace fuel filter and empty sludge filter if i have one...do the cheapest fix first and hope it works

Obstructed fuel or sediment filter is my guess for your problem too.
Cold weather = Thicker fuel
Either one would restrict fuel flow which would greatly limit power.

Will i find the sludge(sediment) filter between the fuel tank and the engine bay on the bottom of the 110 ex mod ffr 2.5 na ? 1986

It's on the chassis rail near the rear o/s wheel, you should see it if you poke you head into the wheel arch.

Sorry if this is a daft question but is it a removable filter that can be cleaned or is it replace item

I thought it was a strainer bowl type thing that you cleaned and put back in but that you needed new seals to replace? I would like to do mine actually. Anyone got part no's please?

I reused the same seals, they were ok. Just cleared the sludge out of the strainer and refitted. Snapped the drain plug off though.

The sludge "filter" is a clean and replace but the fuel filter is replacement every time. The problem with sludge filters is that the plastic bleed screw head snaps off so you have to replace it anyhow :)

I guess that once the sediment filter has been taken off the system needs to be reprimed I guess I'll do that same time as the fuel filter noticed a lot of difference on my 2.5 today and the temp has only risen by 10 degrees so I guess I may have a choked filter as well cheers for the help guys :)

Is the sediment filter necessary? My understanding was it was fitted on mil vehicles to compensate for the scuzzy derv from jerry cans in the field. If the sediment went tits up could you just bin it and bypass it?

Pretty much yes, given the quality of today's diesel.

Although the tank might be full of crud too.. worth draining and cleaning that if you're taking the sedimenter off. Water is the other problem though, the sedimenter lets you collect and drain water out the fuel.
