Power loss going up hill

Hi all
Just got my daughter an 02 2 door freelander 1` td4 lovely looking car runs well on the flat (her words ) but going up hill it will not pull your hat off,
now a few years ago i would of stripped it down and changed everything,( but to old) so as anyone got any idea what this could be so we can go to it and do it our self, or do i get out the chq book and pay landrover a visit
