Please help p38 4.6 hse gearbox issue

First off i apologise if this has been covered before my only Internet access is through my phone making it very hard to search through forums.

Anyway on to my problem, car was fine until yesterday i switched it into low range to cross a friends snow covered field and ever since it won't go back into normal (high) range.

I have been told there is a way of making it go back into normal mode but can't seem to find any info on what to do next? Please help as i can't afford to drive my daily commute sick in low range using double the fuel.

Sounds like the transfer motor is stuck, fuse blown or the ECU is fried (has been known and is well documented)

First thing is to check the fuse, then sniff the ECU...finally, climb under and take the transfer motor off, you will then be able to turn the ratio selector shaft manually to get back into high range again.....

Then investigate the issue!

Ok so I'll try the ecu and fuse now.

How easy is it to remove the transfer motor? Special tools? Ramp? Professional mechanic only or is it a easy diy job?

Piece of p*ss. Raise suspension to high, axle stand under chassis. Slide under and locate transfer motor. Remove the three mounting bolts and disconnect the wiring connector. Turn the triangular shaft protruding from the transfer box. Mark the motor to box before removal:)
 
Yup, cannot tell you from memory (old fart, before they all start) but I think you will find on the connecting block one common and the other two are for high and low ratio. So an earth to the common and live to first one then the other connection should run the motor in either direction. Check on Rave for wiring diagram but I'm sure I checked one as I said.
 
Ok thanks for the replies. Been out removed motor and manually put the thing back in high range also powered up the motor on the bench in the garage and it works fine. So it's not a seized motor issue, can't smell any burning smell from the ecu so where to check next? Could it be the switch in the great selector (the H pattern bit i mean I'm assuming there is some sort of micro switch in there? )

Cannot help you there Graham, mine's a manual g/box. Glad you have got it back in high range and the motor is ok. Have a look at the connector, you may have a bad connection. Plug the motor back in and get someone to operate the high/low to see if there is any life at the motor:)

Pull the transfer box ECU out and take the lid off, it's a fairly common failure item. You can check for sticking HI/LO switch with a meter at the connector.
Have you checked the fuses?
