i received my land rover 109 2.286cc 1970 series 2a and trying to get it running, it starts but only stays running on choke and doesn't sound healthy really lumpy and alot of black/grey smoke. i'm really abit worried as was told it was running very nice, i need to test it and hope fully something silly other wise i have got to try and get some money back and deal with it.
i just want to get here running and make sure all gears etc work, also next to the clutch on the floor in the corner there is like a button to use with you foot what is that for ? anyone
would really appreciate any ones help.
cheers

Lots of black smoke and rich running - could be clogged air filter. Try running with the filter disconnected. But then it runs better with choke? I think you'd better start with a complete service, replace the ignition components (points, condensor, dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs, possibly leads and coil) and take it from there.

sounds to me like the inlet manifold is sucking in air coupled with either a blocked air filter or high oil pressure maybee too much oil in the engine or worn valve stem oil seals

Hmmm.. who told you it was running well and didnt you have chance to see before buying?? it may just be all gunked up inside the carb and need a good clean, The carbs depending on type can be prone to the base plate warping, they can be repaired and there are posts detailing how to do this often on the net... put carb in oven, get engineering steel with some wet n dry on top and resurface the base plate.
If it was me, id replace plugs, points and possibly coil, get it running and then spray in a tin of 10k boost or for a cheaper option get some REDEX poured down the carb to loosen all the crap.
Do you know how fresh the fuel is?? it does go off

no it was an eBay buy but they did seem very genuine, as they have owned it since 1977 they brought it direct from the MOD they put new exhaust complete on it and the new coil and replaced 1 master cylinder and couple of break lines, condenser and that from the distributor, but they didn't do a very good job broke the back of the rotary, didn't screw the bits in on the inside and after talking to them they said that's the risk you take ****ers. after giving plugs a good clean and sorted out distributor i got her running, not brilliant but so i could move her and know that she gonna be OK and it isn't a ****ter now i can spend get new ultra spark distributor and new leads its got new plugs and coil going to get new thermostat and pump rebuild kit and flush the water system and engine and replace a couple of pipes and breathers then crack on with the body work will upload some pictures soon. Thanks to you all for the help much appreciated

Nothing too bad really! Sure it can be sorted. Hope you didn't pay too much for it. I like the mainbeam switch, except when going round corners in the dark with someone coming the other way. Got any pics?
