Hello all.

So next year me and my girlfriend are driving in my kitted out overland style 110 Defender to the Greek island Kefalonia.

The route I'm taking is the tunnel to France then onto lake Geneva then over the Alps to Lake Garda down the east coast of Italy and get the ferry from Brindisi to the island of Kefalonia. on the way home we might drive through central Italy but still unsure yet.

We have a Villa booked only for the week in Kefalonia the rest we want to camp.

Has anyone done a similar trip/route to this as I'm looking for all the tips tricks and places to stay along the way.

Cheers landy-lee

How much time have you got? Do you want to blat down the motorway or pootle? Or a bit of both? Peage tolls can rack up in France, suggest heading south via Belgium and Germany. Always fill up in Luxembourg if you can, its got the cheapest fuel in Europe. Quite a few countries you have to buy a vignette (Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia) or pay fees Bulgaria, Romaina, Croatia, Hungary.

How about going via Italy on the way down and through the Balkans on the way back, or vice versa. For Albania, scroll down this forum and find my post about last year's trip. For finding campsites I've found https://www.eurocampings.co.uk/ useful.

AA European rescue cover is first class. I think I hold the record for the longest recovery. From far eastern Poland, back to Brixton. Hire cars provided too.

Luxembourg isn't as cheap as it used to be, neither is Greece. Ive driven to Corfu three times now, down through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany then swinging a left at Geneva up into the Alps, Down through the Dolomites to Venice then a ferry to Corfu.
The trip down through France and Germany is a killer, it really is a harsh drive, we always try for the black forest for our first overnight stop, its easier after that. Wild camping in Switzerland is verboten, so don't let them catch you! And driving up the sides of mountains is very very verboten, so don't let them catch you!
Research your route , then do some more research, allow time for stopping to pick your jaw back up off the floor, you will stop a lot in the Alps. Spend a day in Geneva, the castle is well worth a visit. There are lots of camp sites along the way, Swiss camp sites are pretty good, Good, some hotels are fairly cheap for a little luxury, the weather is very changeable, especially in the dolomites so hotels are good to get out of the torrential thunder storms.
