Right, finaly got round to change the piston. Mesured up for the new head gasket and put it all back together. Starts up straight away (good old 300), but it seems alot rougher than it used to. Can you just put my mind at ease, im thinking it because the engine has been apart and it needs time to settle and the new piston to bed in. Is this right?

Remind us ... was it just a PISTON problem?
Did you make sure that pistons 1 and 2 rise and fall EXACTLY together, and the same with pistons 2 and 3 ?

If it's running a bit rough, I don't think the new piston can be held to blame.

Check for things that are LOOSE, like pulleys, belts, dodgy engine mountings, exhaust pipe not clamped properly. That sort of thing.

I think it is very UN-likely there's a problem in the moving parts inside the engine (crankshaft, conrods, pistons), because it fires up well.

It isn't running all smoky is it?

Yeh con rod thrown. All the pistons are fine. It only ran smoky when i first fired it up, its fine now but i will put that down as taces of oil in the bore.

yup - that wud make it run rough, CharlesY ;)

Ahhh yes, well of course I was assuming he had also twisted his crankshaft a bit ...

But for untwisted crankshafts it should be ...

Let's not get involved with the need also to twist the camshaft - OK?

Rough Running diesel engines can be a nuisance to fix without being there to see and hear what the thing is doing.

yeh i can understand. might try and get REME to have a look. and for some reason the fookin spedo doesnt want to work now! fix one thing another breaks lol. Will post the outcome
