I've had enough of this ...

One answer to getting the bloody bent rod out is to STRAIGHTEN IT first.

This means using an oxy-acetylene welding torch with a number 10 nozzle.

FIRST work out what you are going to use to lever on the rod to take the bend out of it. Then heat the rod bright orange hot as quick as you can and straighten it with the levers. And out she comes, right out the top.

Of course, having gotten the rod that hot anyway, why not just turn the oxygen tap open a bit and cut the rod in half? It's scrap anyway.

Use a plumber's heat mat or bits of bent body-panels to protect the innards of the engine. The oxy-acetylene flame can be quite delicate, but it is HellUva HOT, and will melt and cut through a con-rod easily.

If you use the air hacksaw, get speaker magnet bits all around and they will catch all the cuttings. Amazing.

Everyone should have a few speaker magnets stuck to the sides of their toolboxes.

One of those under and close to the cutting blade would catch everything the saw cut off, all the filings. A few would be even better.

It's what I would try first - cut through one arm of the big end.

As a matter of interest the steel of a conrod is quite cut-able, and the saw will cut about twice as well if you have someone with an oil can dripping a few drops of engine oil on the blade as you work. LOW speed, OIL, and steady PRESSURE is the best combination for this job. The oil will also help lots to stop any metal dust getting loose.

Old people are full to the brim of good ideas.
This is because we made all the possible bloody silly mistakes long ago, and then sat down and worked out how not to get into that sort of stupid mess ever again. I could tell you horror stories, but I ain't going to. :doh:

Filling an engine with hack-saw filings is a very bad idea.
Washing them out afterwards only spreads some of them just where you don't want them to go. Far better to capture them right as they come off the blade.

So you go get an old speaker, rip it apart, and take out the ring magnet.
If you can find several, grab them.

Split off the metal plate on top, and remove the bottom plate that has the centre boss on it. All you want is the black ferrite ring magnet.

Try snapping one of the magnet rings into smaller pieces, and then you can fit the smaller bits really close to the cutting zone.

well with any luck i wont have to cut out any more conrods in my 110 but u never know. only had to cut out the last one cos that was how it com. "buggered"

I have never done this myself - but I have helped twice before.

yeah it is a little bent it had took the skirt of the bottom of ther bore when it went. it is also bent if u look at it fron the front. god knows what they did to it before i got the landy. can only guess they went for a swim and she had a bloody good drink. mashed up the veins on the turbo too.

dont know how the engine ran when i got her. chucked out a good cloud of smoke

Are you going to re-build the engine?

It will probably be OK. These are VERY tough engines indeed.

Remember to de-burr the bit of bore where it broke a bit off so that there isn't a jagged sharp edge that will eat the piston skirt.
I light touch with a fine half-round file would sort it.

How much was knocked off?
It probably won't matter at all.

the bit that came off was bout 30mm by 5mm. think i have it somewhere.

will take a pic of the bore tomorrow 4 u all

I did rebuild it with 4 new pistons, new oil seals in the head, valve seats done etc.

ran like an absolute dream and was so quiet. made it the 5 miles home and 2 hours ticking over while doing last bits for the mot. then the head gave way and turned it into a 3cyl chugger. so took it out and stuck a 200 tdi in. just finished stripping that one and putting bits on ebay excluding the head.

So what happened to the engine that bent the rod?

Is that the one in the car now?

When did you cut the rod? Yesterday?

got half way through it today, but they blade went blunt i couldnt find the pack of blades i just bought!!!

forget the speaker magnets theyre **** weak compared to the magnets out of something like a busted wiper motor or window winding mechanism and theyre square aswell as curved and fit into places like cylinders a lot easier

other good magnets i have are the ones off the kiddies construction toys (the little 1"magnets you connect together with the 10mm ball bearings) great fer getting filings out of yer eyes and powerfull as fook (neodinium )

mate of mine has me boring n fitting these magnets into sump plugs to catch metal particles out of the oil (dunno if it does any good meself )
