Pantelis,

Lets just assume this beer fueled frenzie I have comes to fruition would
you be able to organise something close to a Ferry port?

I'm looking at Autoroute which only shows ferries in to Igoumenitsa in the
North and Patras in the South. I'd guess financially the North would be the
prefered venue but there doesn't appear to be much in the way of Motorways
on Autoroute....which is a good thing unless your tugging a caravan?

What do you think?

Euros 682 return from Bari to Igoumenitsa (Aug 21 and Aug 28th for the sake
of some dates) 4 Berth outside cabin 2 adults , 2 children, Disco and large
caravan.

No details for 2007 yet on the site but gives an idea.

There would of course be camping, ferries / chunnel and fuel in addition but
this doesn't look a bad deal to take in France, Switzerland (extra vehicle &
caravan tax mind!), Italy & Greece.

Unlike the UK unofficial we may need to pack a fan or two.

Sounds like we got ourselves a convoy!!!!

This really could turn out a top do!

Are you thinking of caravan or just staying over at a B&B etc? I'm not sure, for my first towing a
caravan type deal i would want to do 3200 miles!!! LPG would nearly pay for itself in one trip!!!!

Caravan meself.... You have plenty of time to get some practice in...
Eastnor... Malvern to be honest it's not that bad, My first trip abroad
ever was with the Caravan to the South of France.

I found it fine as long as you don't over react when a truck comes past and
sucks you towards them.. It's almost better to ignore it as it almost self
corrects. Does teach you to keep them peeled on the mirror though.

The beauty of the Caravan is if the plan goes up the wall we can pitch down
at a municipal campsite or Aires (Motorway rest area) given our numbers
we'll be well 'ard.

I'm so happy that it's not just me that is realising that borrowing /
owning a caravan is a "natural" step in Land Rover ownership! Phew.
Time to grease the wheel bearings on the ol' Avondale Sandpiper or
whatever the hell it is!

Wouldn't be without ours now, can't get away enough in it and it's very
handy. Later in the year I have a shoice of 3 nights in a hotel costing me
£70 a night or tow the caravan down and park in a loverly site by a pub for
£3.50 a night... choices choices!!

The other rather surprising benifit is that they don't depreciate anything
like cars do either.

Oh yes, only time I visited was in early April and we needed sunblock
then even through the infamous Athens smog. It is as far south and a
little further than Sicily.

Drat, thats 2 weeks which kind of defs out touring en route. Also cost me an
arm and a leg in lost Bank holiday rate working. Could gain ground and
reduce driving by going from Venice.

Looked up my Michelin Map of Europe and it's not a bad old run... seems to
be much more in the way of Motorways in the south (oddly refered to as West
Greece) from the port towards Athens.

Thinking back to 101's though easter and Heat wise would make sound sense.
I'll check my shift roster see if it'll bankrupt me. Then we have the dilema
of matching Easter Hols across county Borders... Mrs D is a teacher so can't
be AWOL.

I think first we'd need to compare when Easter Hols are.... as yet, not a
clue.

Reckon 600 quid by ferry from Venice to Patras, for a family of four in
a 101 - the bastards really sting us for the height of the vehicle.

Are there enough of us to get a group rate for this project I wonder ?

We have 30th March - 16th April 2007 Easter holidays.

Thats good!

I've just worked out the Maths and it's a none starter for a two week run
for us.

At best I've calculated Fri from school to Ferry port, Sat to Luxemburg, Sun
to Augsburg, Mon to Due south of Innsbruck, Tues arrive Venice and ferry at
1900 hours arriving Thurs at 0600. This pretty much gives a day to turn
around and come back on the return leg. I've worked on 250 miles a day which
with a Caravan is enough and with a 101 would need an ear drum transplant.

Cooler is better I guess but this would be way too much travel for the hell
of it. based on the above I'd be looking realistically at a 4 week break
minimum to justify the travel pain and expense.

You may not I've avoided Switzerland... this is because you have to pay a
tax on your Vehicle AND caravan which adds up to a fair wedge unless you
stop there a while or return in the same year isn't worth the short cut.

As much as it pains me an Airplane may actually make sense on this
occasion... I understand Disco nav systems work in some ;-)

We'd only take the ambi for this anyway, but two vignettes would only
amount to 40 quid, and you might save that in petrol...

A/C will only be necessary if you chose to visit from early June until mid
to end September.
LPG is a nice idea though.

I will be opening a new subject regarding the fuel economy.

Nige Hi,

It is extremely simple to find my location/house on a map of Greece.
First of all the coordinates are N 38 19' 10''
E 023 48' 26''
But it is much simpler by just looking at the map.

Find Athens (the capital city of Greece) and to its right (East to
North-East) you will see a bird like shaped island called Evia.
Evia is connected with mainland Greece with a few ferry crossings.

One of them on the Southern part of the island, facing to the West (toward
Attica region where Athens is) connects the port of Eretria (on the Evian
side) with the port of Oropos or Nea Palatia (on the Attican side)
My house is there, facing the sea (looking at Evia)

Pretty simple to find and about 15 minutes away from the Highway leading
from Athens to Thessaloniki.

If you come by ferry from Italy to Patras it is also very easy to come by
the house.

On a separate note I have just returned from a very nice and interesting
excursion in Peloponnese (the palm with five fingers shaped like "island" on
the Southern part of mainland Greece)
I have several years to go there and it turns out that a lot of new guest
houses and appartments have been erected and operate. Nice and cheap food,
thousands of Km of dirt roads with free access, lots of water, trees and
orgiastic vegetation, Byzantine churces, ancient ruins and lots of roasted
pigs and lamb chops, sausages and Greek food specialties waiting.
Also realised that an old friend from my Kayak and white water rafting days
has set up a new base for such activities about 100 Km from there on the
river Lousios.

Nige Hi,

can be sorted than that.

I drove my first Camel from Guildford to Athens back in 1995 and then took a
drive from Athens to London and back in 1998 with my wife when we decided to
get married in London.
IIRC it was about 1750 Km from Ancona port to London (in Kensington)
