Morning campers,
I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Petra in Jordan from UK in 2013 in my Discovery (stop sniggering at the back!). Long time ambition, and something my Son wants to see too. Wide open to suggestions, especially routes, as there are many different ways ( all overland through EU, or hop on a ferry etc). Any advice from kit to take to what I need to arrange etc etc. Any restrictions on taking my son etc. Obviously Im hoping that the unrest in that part of the world is sorted by then! Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony

I've just come back from Jordan, though not with the land rover. It's an amazing place and I really recommend you get further south in the country to Wadi Rum. We hopped on the back of a locals 4x4 for a tour but would have loved to have had our defender with us. It's a massive area of desert with rocky outcrops. Pretty sure you can drive yourself in.

Re the unrest, Jordan itself is absolutely fine. They've had one or two riots in the past month and one death. Not that different to London last year... There are a few specific towns you should avoid but generally the country felt very safe.

Re the route, check the relationships between various countries you'd like to visit and in what order. Having one countries stamp in your passport may cause issues on the border of the next. E.g. Israel and Jordan aren't on great terms.

Hope that helps
