When I did mine last time I bought a LUK 3 piece kit and when I took it out of the box it had valeo stamped all over it, if that helps

im not keen on solid conversion kits , i usually fit luk flywheels

Interested to know why? Surely the damping is taken up by the springs in the DMF or by the springs in the friction plate in a solid flywheel? I think the TD5 used the same clutch and they're converted all the time?

I rang LUK on Hereford today. He says the DMF is no longer made and hasn't been for so long that he doesn't even have the part number anymore! However, they're listed all over. LR Direct have them at about £515+VAT but I cannot connect to their website as it says "it is a security risk". Island do them but I am still boycotting them.

I also spoke to Rakeway Motorsport. Brilliant chaps. REALLY helpful and friendly and seem pretty decent. They're just about to start doing a flywheel conversion kit for £370+VAT. They need the ring-gear off the old flywheel though as they cannot get them off Land Rover for love nor money. For the standard kit that doesn't include the friction plate and pressure plate / release bearing. Would need to work out the a correct sprung friction plate. I think a ceramic one is bit over the top for a stock engine. See http://www.rakeway.co.uk/page2.html

I also spoke to Clutch Fix (see https://www.clutch-fix.co.uk/). They do conversion kits with double sprung pressure plates and ceramic friction plates but also stock versions with standard friction material. Again, VERY helpful and friendly but he's going to get back to me with a price because the money man wasn't in when I rang. Apparently their Facebook page is full of chipped P38s with racing clutches if someone wants to go looking on Facebook for them.

So, there are options. Just need to digest the pros and cons of a DMF versus single billet and think if the price is worth it for something I'll probably have to yank out again in however many miles.

Oddly enough, I also spoke to Valeo. He says they do the clutch kit but no DMF. Odd that as someone I spoke to later in the day swore Valeo used to do a DMF for the P38.

Clutch-fix have called me back. They do a solid flywheel for £345+VAT, the clutch kit to go with it for £115+VAT and then a bit of postage so £570 all in. As ever they need the old ringgear off the old flywheel. I should note that the friction plate will have uprated damping springs so should take most vibration out. And the R380 is fitted to some real Landy chuggers so should handle a bit anyway.

So, decision time! Solid flywheel and no more f*cking stupid DMF failures for £570 or LUK DMF from LR Direct for £515+VAT plus the Valeo clutch kit for £150+VAT = £800 for potentially slightly quieter running and the opportunity to rip it all apart again in 10 years time. Mind you, the clutch will need replacing by then but it should be less than including the whole bl**dy DMF assembly! And at the moment I am unable to connect to the Land Rover Direct website as it says it is a security risk!

you cant get anywhere near the damping from clutch plate springs that you can from a dmf, which is something you usually only change once in cars life, youll find gear box packs in next

Thanks, James.

Did some digging. DMF damps transmission AND engine vibration whereas the clutch springs only (predominantly) damp transmission vibration.

Anyway, LUK'ed out. :) See what I did there? LUK flywheel from Eurocarparts (you have to search for part number 336670010) and then after enter the promo code CRAZY70. That brings the price down to about £566.

Must admit I am happier sticking with original spec.

I would stick with the dmf. I changed a transit to solid flywheel a few years ago and it was awful afterwards. Worst thing was, it was snatchy on take up but it also had a very noticeable impact on driveability. It was noticeably more sluggish on pickup.

I've got the clutch kit off https://www.clutch-fix.co.uk/. They really are stars up there. They're doing an uprated clutch allegedly better than the Valeo one for £150 delivered. They're even going to stick some high temperature grease and whatever on it for me and bung in the fixing bolts too. I'll let you know how the install goes but on current service and knowledge I cannot praise them enough.

Going for the whole hog: rear crank seal ordered (kit comes with the plastic thing and hopefully grease to ease the new seal into place), spigot bearing, spiral pins, oil pipe o-rings, breather washers. Also ordered a rocker cover gasket and new inlet manifold gaskets (might as well as the inlet manifold is off). The whole bl**dy lot. Not ordered replace gearbox rubbers yet but will have a look tomorrow and maybe add them in too. If this thing isn't as smooth as silk and running like new afterwards it is matches time. Maybe I should do the engine mounts too?!

Damn, just realised. There is that horrible breather filter thing. No idea where to find that. Seem to remember @wammers found one somewhere and it was a horrible price?

Bit late Grrrrr but I`ve gone for ebay item number 360955100443, it`s the correct luk part number checked it against the receipt when I replaced it april 2009.

Cheers. I did look at eBay but there are so many Chinese copies out there that unless someone can vouch for them I just won't risk it. I'm not even sure how Paddock or Island get theirs because LUK say they don't deal with them.
