I was just about to order 2 new track rod LONG, and a steering damper from paddocks, thought id have a quick look on ebay

and theres a used damper attached to a track rod long, im not going to buy used... but leads me to ask the question, are there 1 or 2 "track rod long" on a p38 ?

also any advice on where best to buy from appriciated, i was going to buy from island 4x4 which has an oem damper for £56, and track rod long 34 oem or 19.99 brit part , would there be much difference ? if its just 1 i need il buy oem

Personally I wouldn't touch Britpart having read about all the failures.

But there was a recent thread on here where a poster had multiple failures with supposedly OEM-quality Lemforder balljoints. With that in mind I'd rather pay half as much and take the risk!

As attached....

The Drag Link has 2x Short Joints and the Track Rod is 1 Short and 1 Long

excellent thank you,i nearly ordered 2 , pleased about that

is the drag link or any other parts there worth replacing (if cheap and easy) to improve the steering and drive ?

well last mot a few months ago they had a good look at it, it had new track rod ends and a good inspection, he said everything was fine but will need new track rod long soon but not urgent , didnt mention drag links or anything

On the P38 there are two Bars....

At the rear of the front wheels is the Track Rod

At the front with one end connected to the Steering Box Drop Arm and the other end to the Swivel Housing (With the Steering Damper Attached in the middle) is the Drag Link....

Both have Ball Joints (Track Rod Ends) fitted at either end....

The Track Rod has one LONG threaded Ball Joint and one SHORT threaded Ball Joint

The Drag Link has two SHORT threaded Ball Joints....

If your joints are new (as you said above) why did the garage say one needs replacing????

JM....

How come it is listed as a seperate part number in the Parts Catalogue??

As attached - I'm confused now !!!!

EDIT: Scratch that - Item 6 is the ball joint AND the rod asone item .....doh

it is confusing ,but you either buy complete track rod with both all joints or the one seperate joint or rod which come with crimped ball joint
