hi gents,

i was driving my 1995 p38 4.6 auto to work down the motorway when it decided to go ino low ratio, as you can imagine i slowed down quite qiuckly o 50 mph, luckily i had my hand on the shifter and quickly put it in neutral,
i took it to a garage and said it could be the filter in the gearbox so i got them to change it and put some new oil in, but still has not remedied the problem
i was told i would need a new gearbox but i am not convinced due to the fact it never had problems changing gears and it never missed a heart beat.
even now the gears still drive ok but it just wont go back into high ratio?

any advice or help before i get a new gearbox and find out the gearbox is ok would be very much appreciated. thanks

Hi Dave,

When it went into low ratio, did the low ratio lights light up down the left hand side of the H gate??

What happens if you try and shift to low range and then move back into high range again??

Totally ignore what the garage said, its NOTHING to do with the gearbox, filter, oil or anything like that. The garage obviously has no idea about P38's.

The high/low range is controlled via a motor on the transfer box which is attached to the gearbox behind it. Its the box which takes the power from the gearbox and transfers that to the front and rear prop shafts. Attached to the box is the motor.

In your case, from what you have described its going to be something electrical. My first bet would be the ECU but it could be a number of other things.

Anyway, as I said earlier, as its now in low range, are the low range lights lit up and L displayed on the message centre??

hi wills

the gearbox lights are flashing on the low ratio side but there is no low or high on the dash, i have tried the usual stuff like resetting the becm but still nothing.
thanks for your reply.

sorry forgot to add

no its not registering the high ratio on the dash, i have tried to swap it over to high and low loads of times but it just wont recognise the high ratio on the dash or the gear lever.

thanks for replying
