hi, finally bought my first range rover, a metallic green 1995 2.5 dtse, and really love it. Has been well looked after by previous owners, and i just want it for sunday cruises with the family and the odd trip to work.

My query is that on the centre console is a button relating to the hi/lo ratio settings. It is constantly illuminated. A quick look at the manual, followed the instructions to disengage it, and it is still on. could not hear any noise etc from below to indicate any thing happening. Took it to a friend who is a mechanic, he says she is driving fine, cruises smoothly at 70mph. Says that if she was in low setting she wouldnt get above 20mph, and it must be a loose wire, or faulty relay.........any thoughts on the matter?????????

it seems to be in hi ratio at the moment, even though the Low Ratio symbol is lit. There is no sound or vibration from any parts moving below, when i try to use the button.

999, just checking,

you say the low ratio symbol is lit, is this symbol in the switch above the centre console to the left or the word "LOW" in the instrument pod just under the rev counter, and if you press the Hi/Lo switch does the word "LOW" change to "HIGH" and then go out?

I don't hear any noise or feel any movement when I change ratio in my Range.

the button is top left of the centre console, big and small cog with the letter L in one of the cogs. Permanently switched on, no matter what i do, no indication of fault on the lcd display below the rev counter. Doesnt seem to effect the driving, but nice to know if it is likely to cause any (expensive) problems in the future??

Is this an auto or manual ?

HI 9, I can't see it causing you any problems, the ecu for the transfer case has a record for going wrong, there are control relays and a sensor system which monitor the transfer case. You are not getting the signal words 'Low or High" in the instrument pod which to me shows that your vehicle has a faulty Hi/Lo control circuit.

I personally like things to work just in case they are required, below is a link to download workshop manuals and parts list program for your vehicle, I would advise you at least download them and have a read.

Also a link to an American site for Range Rovers listing common problems and fixes the diesel version of your vehicle was never imported to the USA so refer to the 4.0/4.6 section for your vehicle

hi zzr1200, thanks for your advice and the links. As i already said this is my first range rover ( first 4x4 ever ), and would like things to go smoothly. Dont ever see my self going off road or towing big loads, already said it is for a sunday cruise etc.

Up for mot tomorrow, everything seems ok, slight leak around rocker cover gasket, but will clean that up. Have heard horror stories about head gaskets going and the big bills that follow. Visual inspection of mine looks fine. Some really very small oil deposits on the seal around the major bolts securing the gasket, but no tell tale sludge on it or the oil filler cap indicating water leakage.

After mot, going to get new glow plugs, rocker gasket and filters changed, but think it is worth changing the head gasket for peace of mind. It costs about £45,.........any idea how much it would cost to have it fitted?????

Do a full service, if the head gasket shows no signs of a problems I'd leave well alone personally, but make sure the cooling system is working 110%, as it seems head gasket problems start after cooling system problems,

If you have a laptop theres a useful software program that allows you to read/reset suspension faults/ride heights and the best bits is its free...:D

You will however have to buy a special connection lead (20.00 quid approx) to run the program, I believe the lead can be purchased on Ebay, I ordered mine from the USA.

Link below to site for info vids, lead and program.
