P38 1997 4.0SE clock bulb replacement

Clock not illuminated so I thought it best to remove and check the bulb.
The manual says take off the centre console side panels and remove the whole switch panel.
The clock appears to be fixed via the rear of the switch panel..??
What a pain - is there no other way to get the clock out??

If you have small hands, it might be possible through the radio opening if you take out the radio.

I need to take out the radio anyway, to connect a bluetooth input. Looks like it will them be a task for my good lady wife.

If you can release the latch on the radio side of the clock, you can ease that side forward then try to get a finger round to the other side.

The storage cubby above the radio pulls out (with care), then you can access the clock bulb.

The cubby has to come out together with the switch panel. It's one moulding (well it was on the two I modified for 7" screens.)

The piece across the bottom with the fan vent can be removed but only after removing the whole assembly if you want to do it without breaking it.

It was seperate on mine, 2000 my, maybe the construction was changed at some point.
It seems it was the cubby on later models with the sat nav option.
