P38 - Front fogs not working.

Found out my front fogs are not working.

Bulbs look fine.

Can't seem to find where they are fused from. Anyone know?

Also, had a quick perusal through the Workshop disc and came across a section that gives you the installation procedure for putting these in. Part of it seems to indicate that you need to programme them into the car.

If this is correct, it could just be that they have become un-programmed.

Can anyone confirm this?

you need to enable them in the becm i think if its not previously had them!!

I am pretty sure they were there from when the car was new.

If they have to be programmed in, how is this done?

Been looking at the workshop disc have found out a little more info (could be dangerous!!!).

Part of the install procedure is to put a fuse into position 40 and install a relay into the fuse box under the bonnet. The fuse was there (and ok) but the relay isn't.

Now my guess is that the fog lights are installed the same way whether they are put in at new or at a later date.

Therefore, I must first start by putting in the correct relay.

Sounds like BBS colin the convict spam- he tried spamming and got ****ed off out of it.

Only one front fog was working on my 2000 M/Y dse when I got it did the usual checks bulbs connections ect couldnt find any thing wrong, cleaned all connections on becm with switch cleaner and both have worked since, might be worth a try.

There are a few LZ'ers around with Faultmates who would help which would be a lot cheaper than a dealer, there are also a few indies using Autologic and other kit who are also cheaper than a stealer I ain't plugging Faultmate, just pointing out the options

Your 2000 DSE is not supposed to have the fog lights fitted if it's an auto, it blocks the airflow to the auto box oil cooler.

Its ok Datatek mines manual couldnt afford to run auto round town which most of my running is and yes I know auto better round town, friend had auto which did 16 mpg round town I get 24 mpg ish with a very heavy right foot! Sent you a PM sir.

Update - both front fogs now working and no expense incurred!!!

From the wiring diagrams the front fogs have their power delivered separately from the BECM.
So I disconnected both the plugs concerned and connected 12v to their wires. One came up fine, the other - nothing.
I then checked for continuity on the one that didn't work - all fine. Earth leg fine. Must be the bulb, so swapped the bulbs over and proved it was the bulb.

Looking more closely at the "bulb" I realised that it is actually in two parts - the bulb itself and the metal assembly in which it sits. Took the bulb out to find one leg was covered in dirt. Cleaned it up it now works fine.

So I now knew the wiring from the connectors at the BECM end to the bulbs was sound.

Plugged both the connectors in, fired the car up, headlights on, front fog lamp button on - only one fog working. Not ideal, but at least I now knew the main elements worked. I then checked the wiring from the fog lamp switch to the BECM connector - fine.

Therefore, I concluded the BECM output to the non working fog lamp wasn't working.

I wasn't going to shell out loads of dosh just to get the BECM fixed for this minor problem so I decided to use my brain!!

Basically I decided to tap into the power leg of the working fog lamp and run a new wire across to the other fog lamp and connect it to its bulb. The earth leg remained in place, I just disconnected the bulb from the cars wiring loom - it's just a connector inside the fog lamp housing. I just ran my new wire into the fog lamp housing via the same grommet as the original wiring. As I already had the the proper connectors and car wire to hand it was a very simple job to complete.

If I ever get the BECM fixed then all the original wiring is still in place waiting to be re-connected back up and my little fix can be easily removed.

Feeling rather smug with myself now so going to celebrate with a beer and watch the football.
