p38 engine change v8 to diesel

looking for adivice
i want to put a diesel in my auto v8 p38
ive been told a bmw e36 engine will marry
strate on to the auto gear box
is this true
i would be greatfull for any advice

One off my neighbours put a diahatsu 2.8 turbo in his p38 over 5 years ago, still has a dash full of warning messages now :doh:
