Hi All
My 1998 P38 burned out both front door lock actuators within a few weeks. I replaced them and all was well for a month or so but then it did the same to the new ones £140 each

. In desperation I passed it over to my local dealer who thinks it could be a door outstation sending duff signals to the becm and causing it to keep trying to lock the door and burning out the motors. I suspect the becm might be on its way out and don't want to risk another pair of locks but at the same time don't want to start messing with the dreaded black box. I wonder if I could fit an in line fuse ir a thermal cut out switch (about £5 on ebay) to give them some protection.

Does anyone know which would be the best wire to fit either into? There seems to be a common to the cdl and super-lock actuators, maybe that's the one or maybe it's a daft idea?
All advice and comments most welcome. I have an ever increasing collection of knackered door locks to disect and experiment with.

check my post 1643 today, probably r/f reciever not becm.change locks, disconnect r/f and see what happens.is your battery being flattened?there are plenty of posts on this subject all seem to point to the r/f reciever.if its waking up your becm when parked locked, it may also be trying to relock your front locks and eventually burning them out.dont buy r/f from fleabay, buy latest from land rover.regards

The RF receiver is the most likely cause telling the BECM to continually lock the doors. It is not likely to be an out station especially as there are 2 involved. IN any case they don't send signals to the BECM that trigger locking or unlocking they receive them. They only report the state of the door either locked or unlocked.

Thanks for the info Guys. Yes the battery does go flat and I get a message saying: Alarm activated. ignition tamper fault. but only when it has done its dastardly deed to the passenger side. I remember with fondness the days when we opened a door with a key then leaned over to open the passenger side.
Lots to read now will follow the threads on this topic.
Thanks again

disconnect the plug to the passenger door lock actuator!!

then you can lean over and unlock it!!

when you sat its burned out the door lock actuators, have you tried refurbing them?

there is only a small motor in them, something like you get on a scalextric car, mebbe you can repair em with a small suitable motor and/even if they only work long enough to test the theory it would be worth the hassle!!

there is a small thingy m bob in there too, i have no idea what its called or what exactly it does but it looks like a tiny motor, i dont remember seeing any circuitry to burn out so its probably going to be an easy fix if you have the skills!!

Yes I took one of my collection to bits and as you say there is a small motor and an even smaller motor. Suspect that the latter is the superlock but I could be proven wrong. The coils in the larger motor are burned out but if I could get another motor it could be replaced. I've ordered two new ones anyway and am now thinking of replacing the r/f receiver as well after reading this forum. My pension is in line for a big hit this month. :( still fancy the thermal cut out as belt and braces, would hate to see the latest shiney new locks join the collection

yes the small motor is the superlock.ive stripped down one of my many collection and the larger locking motor has burnt out.ive been on tinternet trying to source new motors without success.datatec said somebody on the forum had found some replacements but carnt remember who.if your out there make yourself known.my motor number is 09264n if thats any help to anybody.it ****es my off that a £150 unit is rendered u/s by a £4 motor.f#cking rr,f#cking chink lockmakers

Hi Gib
I replaced both locks ( for the second time ) and this time I repaced the RF receiver as well. Touch wood no problems. It took a while to build a bit of confidence and I expected it to misbehave again but so far so good. To be honest I forgot about sourcing the lock motors but I believe that the rear ones can be used and are much easier to find second hand as they don't tend to burn out.
Keep smiling:)

Any update on this guys?

My two new front ones have burned out and I don't really want to buy another two!

thanks Datatek I'll replace the RFR.

Any ideas if i can fix the 'new' locks or am I going to need another two!

I have burnt out passenger side door lock motor and the battery is going flat.

I suspect that the RF Reciever will be the problem. Is is simply a matter of putting a new RF reciever in (baught from ebay) or is it more complex than that?

Receiver is Plug n Play but don't buy from Ebay as you are likely to get an old one in a new case. The only reliable source is a LR specialist like Island 4 x 4.

Hi Trevor,

Don't buy an RF receiver from Ebay, there are three revisions of the receiver and you should fit the latest YWY500170. The cheap ones on Ebay are always old revions. See attached pic. Island 4x4 are often suggested as a good source for this item, about £200 though. Easy to fit just replace, job done.

Must learn to type faster. Datatek beat me to it.

Hi i know bit late responding but just noticed the thread , as some of the more experienced guys on here will know i had lots of problems on this subject and with their help and advice i solved the problem totally and, yes it was down to the r/f receiver i also had to renew the front door locks and even a new key in the end, before i totally resolved the issue.but do buy the r/f unit from recomended supplier. good luck!.:(

Hi Trevor
I bought my RF receiver from my local Land Rover specialist ( about £160 )and just swapped it with the original. It worked straight away and touch wood 18 months or so later and no more burned out locks. I went through 2 sets during my learning curve so an expensive lesson.
Good luck
Pete

I can confirm that the RF receiver is the issue here. I have replaced this 2 years ago, no flat battery and no more issues with the front door locks burning out.

I'm interested in the comment that you can use rear door latch to replace front door latch..... can anybody confirm this?
Many thanks
RonB
