Well it seems I may have a cracked block!
Just need to complete a couple more tests to confirm this.

I replaced the cylinder heads about 3000 miles ago with brand new ones. Everything has been great, 500 mile round trip to Somerset no problem.
At the weekend went out, after about 15 min the temp hit the red!
Shut the engine straight off.
Trailered the car back home. After a bit of inspecting I could easily smell exhaust gases in the coolent.
Going to confirm this at the weekend with a sniff test.

Seems like a got the classic scenario of cylinder head fault, but is actually a cracked block.

I'm determined to get it up and running again. What does people suggest?
Pick up another engine on eBay? Or buy a top hat liner block and carry out a full rebuild?
Does anyone know where there's a good place to get a new block from?

Thanks

Get a top hat lingered block, I had one in my p38 when it dropped 3 liners and it was solid after that, it is still taxed and insured to this day, I sold it probably 2 years ago it is a 1996 4.0.

Where did you get the block from, and how much did you pay?
I did check the liners when re-doing the heads. They all looked good, must have cracked in the wall and leaking up the side of the liner.
