Well im now using the p38 4.6 auto, and forgive my ignorance of autoboxes, but it is really rather slow. Apart from during upchanges when it really seems to lock up and put its power down like it should do most of the time surely?

Duff ATF fluid?

Really dont know much about auto boxes :(

Autoboxes do have an amount of slippage in them, that being said, it shouldn't 'Flare' if it does, drain the fluid and replace with new and add some Lucas Transmission Fix fluid, this cleans the valve block and the valves, as a sticking valve can be a reason for Flaring during changes, as the valve isn't pulling in the drive clutch correctly causing slippage...

Datatek swears by the stuff and there have been good reports on using it on here!

I too am new to auto and found it a bit strange to start with. I took advice from the wise ones on here and first thing changed the gearbox filter and topped it up with ATF and a bottle of Lucas transmission fix. You can only ever get half the fluid out from the drain plug (the oil cooler and pipes are still full unless you take the oil cooler apart too). You will notice an improvement in the changing up (and no flaring) after a few hundred miles. It apparently takes this long for the Lucas to coat everything. Then after another 5k I've just drained it again and topped up again using another dose of Lucas.
There is also learning how to drive it. It has taken me a while but I feel like I can now use the gears pretty well, by knowing when it will change, what revs/speed and accelerator position. Recently I learnt about how to get the torque converter to lock up in 3rd which is useful at around 40mph or up hills...

You can also select third (or 2nd or 1st) for engine braking, save on the brakes and also saves fuel as the overun fuel cut off works as long as the engine is being driven by the transmission.
