COILS ARE TERRIBLE!! avoid them. i have 2 p38's one on coils one on air and there is NO comparison between the 2. ride, handling or comfort there is no competition go with air.
There's a thread on rr.net along similar lines (re ride quality).
It seems that a lot of P38s seem to be suffering at the moment. I wonder if there is a single item that has just got to the age where it starts to deteriorate on all P38s....
I will gues its the bits NO one wants to change - the hub ball joints. Word on the street is these are only good for 100k miles. Just a thought.

Lets face it, all this bull**** about a better ride on coils is just that BULL****. EAS is a quantum leap better than coils. People who complain about wallowy ride should change their shockers. You get exactly the same wallowy ride on coils IF your shocks are knackered. Air springs have exactly the same function as coil springs. EAS automatically adjusts for vehicle load also for vehicle speed, to stabilise it. Coils do none of this and are only fitted because the owner cannot do simple repairs to what in essence is a very simple system. There are very few EAS systems that cannot be repaired for less than half the price of a coil convertion. So there.![]()
Funny though that Jaguar have only recently started using air suspension when the likes of Mercedes have used it for years on the S class. They always said they could not better coils for the ride.

I'm not complaining about wallowy ride, I'm just sick of being thrown about by every little ripple in the road. I've had new shocks, new bushes, new steering damper, marginal improvement. An ancient RR Classic I drove rode far better than my P38, hence the question re coils.
Thanks.
youve more choice to get it how you want it
With EAS the ride is automatically compensated for no matter what the load. It is self levelled no matter what the distribution of the load. With coils you cannot hope to do that. With coils there always has to be a compromise, you cannot get them to suit all operating conditions and load variables. EAS can do this to a very great degree. It can be compared to a push bike, coils are a three speed bike, EAS is an eighteen speed bike. EAS covers far more variable conditions than even a well chosen set of coils can ever do. EAS gives a far more stabil platform over a much wider range of loads and speeds than coils can do.
I completely agree. i cant understand why its still in debate. i have driven on both and there leagues apart.
