Hi

I bought a 2001 DSE Auto to replace a new 90 that I bought and couldn't get on with for the very reasons you cite, even in a new one!!

The RR has been a bit of a trial but I have had about 10,000 miles of trouble free cruising in great comfort between London and Cornwall after I fixed and replaced many parts

You really do need some spannering ability to own one of these cars, loads of help and advice from this forum helped me through every problem, it's a huge source of knowledge.

It does use a lot of fuel even as a diesel, I get between 20-30 on a run.

I keep threatening to sell mine as it has let me down recently, but it appears to have been a failed part or maybe my lack of attention to coolant levels.

I did consider a RR Sport before buying the P38 but I thought it better to have the money in the bank during these tricky times.

Do sometimes regret getting rid of the 90 but I just couldn't get on with it.

Good luck with your search, a manual certainly narrows your options a bit.

I do understand where your all coming from saying why do you want a Manuel, but i hear loads of auto box probolem cropping up on here, so my thoughts are if you can get hold of a Manuel, get one! I would love a Manuel 4.0, but i can't afford to run a v8! And when they go wrong, which they do as i make my living out of them, especially engine work isn't cheap! So i want a diesel Manuel, but not just coz i want fuel efficiency! The h box is fookin awesome, my dads is a h box, but i don't like diesel auto's, my mums disco is auto and its gutless! Ino it seems like im not taking advise but i have made my mind up and im sticking with it! Iv driven a few Manuel diesels and loved them! But 25 mpg is fine by me! Maby a little less would be fine too! Thanks for the input tho, and i will look at tho's shocks aswell! :D

I've had my diesel auto for 8 years now - it's been pretty solid. Have only had a recon air compressor fitted at 100,000 miles (150 quid fitted) and the usual bushes brakes etc

I would advise having the engine mapped though as the standard output is not great. Mine was done before I bought it and I can get 35 MPG on a steady run plus a bit more oomf but I didn't buy it for the speed!

....I have an Integrale for that :)

Dream on, that 35mpg will be from the message centre which doesn't know about the re-map. More oomf = more fuel on a diesel....simples.

The Diesel P38 can be considered a little lack lustre, the problem being not much happens torque/power wise before 1750-2k rpm....then the things lifts her skirt and off she trots, trouble with the manual variant is the need to get the revs into this range as you lift the clutch, then things will start moving....not an issue normally, but on a hill or towing this can be a real bug-bear.

Drive a few and take a view on it, the auto box masks this apparent lack of go very well which is why people advocate an auto on the diesel more so than a manual, but aslong as you are aware of the strange accelerator pedal travel (not much happens in the first third, then off she goes in the second third, the final third of pedal travel is just to make more noise and heat with no appreciable level of acceleration) you will find thay can be quite spritely when poked!

Totally agree with you St.

I would also say the auto is more in keeping with the comfort and style of car.

Don't get concerned about the MPG difference..make sure you just buy a good one

Mpg isn't a huge thing for me, i just want to get more than 18 mpg, otherwise i may aswell have a v8 and boot that about everywhere! Becuase my dads returns 16! I have driven a few 2.5 diesels, and they quite spritely to be fair, you had to put your foot down, but they did go! And they were Manuel, so that's why i decided to go for a Manuel! But i wont dismiss the auto! Thanks guys, this is all helping me! As in realy getting fed up with the 90 now! Might be doing a 400 mile round trip on her this weekend!

Auto is better for all round drivability. :);)

ive got a manuel diesel had it 7ys and love it dont like autos i like being in the gear i want not what the box thinks, dont have trouble towing its great wouldnt change it, going to keep it till it dies, good luck with the search hope you find a nice one they are out there.

yea that's what i meant, i don't like the person in front of you to be deciding what gear your car is by their speed, because your car changes gear, and if like the disco 1's they shift into 4th at 55, the person in front is doing 50, your revving the **** out of it just to do 50, in 3rd gear! i like the Manuel, and always have ever since i drove one! i want to find a nice one but i will take my time, might even save some money till my insurance runs out on the 90 and then go out and buy a really nice one, low mileage with alot if not full service history! i cant wait to get one, i just want a car that can be serviced and looked after and not need loads of welding, and constantly under the bonnet! thanks guys! :D

They shift into 4th a lot sooner than 55 MPH. They should go into torque lock at 50 MPH but not top gear.

As above and it will shift into 4th at 30mph on light throttle with troque convertor lock up at 50mph. Hold it in third on the lever and the torque convertor locks at around 40mph

yea, my dads changes into 4th at 40mph, but that's depending on what the person in front is doing! but looked at the one on autotrader and that is a nice one, but there is a stunning example on ebay motors on a classified add for 2295, and its perfect for what i want, i just haven't got the money at the moment so i cant really do anything, if i did i would have called him tonite and gone and looked this weekend! full history, in grey i think, and alloys, harmon kardon, Manuel, 2.5, very well looked after and one owner, flipping perfect! to be honest if i find one like that again, ill be surprised! just curious guys, can you explain torque lock to me as iv never herd this phrase before, i may know what it is, but not the phrase! anyway, thanks guys! i cant wait to have one, but want one on air as it ruins them on springs! but i want a manuel, defo, as i will get bored of auto, and the auto needs more maintenance, filters and regular oil changes to keep in shape! thanks guys! tom. :D
