A kamaz or ural is the way forward :)

Goon - we have finished there, Im over at Beckton for a few weeks.

Thanks for getting this thread back on subject :( :D The sanky will carry bulky items along with spares and spare fluids, maybe a jerry can or 2 for diesel but my twin tanks should cope with this aspect. I envisage an inbuilt 50L water tank (within the chassis, I am speaking to myway about this) using a hand pump and also 2x 20L scepter water cans. One will hold 'grey' water the other will be for the filter to filter into it from the dirty one. I have a blue and a black one so I dont mix them :)

The trailer will also hold the RTT. I re-read the trailer section in the expedition guide the other night. sounds like I am on the right track as TS recommends only 50-60% of payload be taken on a sankey (the only trailer he recommends to) so my 3-350kg limit should be fine. some interesting stuff in there about noseweight to, says 50kg, but you also have to remove twice that amount from the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Im just going to keep it as light as possible.

with regards fuel, I dont know. I towed it to my folks and dumped it there. I went for a quick few lanes around my way the eve. I got the ehitch fitted and Its only really pulling away that you notice it (I carry a lot of weight in the rear as it is). On the motorway, IT was fine, flew up hills etc. better than I expected.

should be going to Wales in September so Im thinking of picking up the trailer, taking stuff out the 90 and filling the trailer, few bags of sand and give it a trial run across Strata, Happy Valley, nant y moch and a few others I have in mind. see how it handles. If its a nightmare I may well have to think of something else.

Beckton. lovely part of the world that.Done a fair bit of work round there, at least the geologys simple.
Back to topic are you expecting much clutch wear off road with the trailer? I burnt one out towing offroad but not sure how good the clutch was to start with and it was a twin axle trailer-and im ****e at towing.

as for fuel consumption with mine it knocked around 5mph off, although it obviously depends how you drive and the terrain.

Hi Lee,

Been looking around at the options for docs. I got an Email from a German who had a letter from the DVLA which helped get his sankey registered in Germany. I have also sent an Email to the Russian Embassy in the UK to see what they say. I know it does not help you at present, but thanks again for letting me know this.

I'm sure you will be okay as long as you can show something official like, good luck. I have to admit that even though at the time I was gutted we are better off without the trailer, it takes some serious rethinking but I honestly believe that you can over prepare and sometimes it's better to just go with the flow.

Back to the Sankey Trailers...

Forget making a box up and all that goes with that...how about this a solution to plonk onto the Sankey?

DSC00028.jpg

It is very strong, has the nicer roller shutters, big compartment at the back with a fold down opener (ideal for mounting cooking equip on possibly?) - even a fold down step on the side to get to the roof. The roof is strong enough so that it could take a roof tent, although I would probably re-infornce anyway.

What do people reckon to that idea?

an aa truck?Temping fate surely?

Well the AA usually get you going, so maybe that is a good omen ;)

Griff when are you doing Wales with your trailer ? Was that this weekend ? Is that why you are not here, trailer stuck in a ditch ? :D

Just kidding, quite keen to hear how it went, housing market sliding so I may not sell my house and so can't afford a truck, may do a trailer after all... If you still recommend it after doing some fun lanes...

I was out last weekend on a 3 day laning trip with a group of Land Rover enthusiasts one of which was a guy who bought a widetrack Sankey off us, he did every lane with it on the back of his 90 (full of camping gear and all his stuff required for the 2 kids with him) he did all the same routes as the rest of the group including a lot of cross axle work and never once did he get stuck or into any trouble ( cannot be said for the 101 that was with us - forever getting stuck), so having seen them in "action" I can highly recomend them for any use!! The lanes we have here vary from very hard granite to very power sapping sandy surfaces

thats good to know BMP.

Will be doing some testing over the 2nd weekend of September, see how it goes. It was my birthday this weekend, so I have been camping/paintballing and out some quad bikes :)

you might experience a lot of drag with that size on - was perfect with 205's. I dragged 2 of them down (top one inside bottom one) from Whithams to here with no problems at all - the bottom sankey also had over 500kg of other stuff in it and my fuel consumption was exactly the same as it always is for the trip

Problems selling my business means I cant afford a truck right now, so I got that... It will have a shower, bed, and cooking facilities... Allegedly :D
