a friend of a friend just sent me an email asking about his mates freelander

he took it into a garage to have his Jatco oil replaced on his 2004 td4

I gave him a call as his mate is very upset

after chatting to him and got the low down and what they did was drained the oil out, then with the engine left off, pulled out the filler plug and filled it until oil came out of the filler plug

couldn't belive what i was hearing , because the guy on driving home said the gears started to jump into gear and got louder and louder

on arriving home he looked under the bonnet and seen oil all over the gearbox

by the sounds of it the seals have all blown, don't know how long u would have to drive it for in order this to happen and would have thought the filler plug would come out and blow an amount of oil out

just wished to share and will get the name of the garage that's in kent / essex border , so can at least give people the heads up in not going near it

amazes me in why oh why can't people leave things alone that they obviuosly don't know anything about them

feel really sorry for his mate, not sure if we got all the oil out , give it a power wash to clean all the oil off then redo it correctly whether or not we could save the box

he traveled nearly 20 miles home

was wondering can u buy seal kits for these boxes and do u need any specialist tools plse

would be great if we may be able to save it as I don't think he's going to get anywhere with the garage and if he took them to court in how many months that would take , whilst in the mean time be without a vehicle

if only these so called experts realised the damage and nightmare they cause on a daily basis to innocent motorists who put there trust in these scumbags

do you know you need new seals ?or has it just blown out of filler, is it really possible some one would fill a box till it over flowed

he said oil was all over the box and the undertray was covered

he said the filler plug was still in the box, but to be honest until it's washed off and put at the correct level won't know 100 percent if the box has blown its seals

am really gobsmacked about how the gearbox was filled up and God knows that they were thinking

wouldn't oil spill out of the filler hole onve the engine is started and oil is starting to be pumped round

wouldnt it build up in pressure

just never heard anything so stupid in all my life of a garage doing this

i feel really bad for this guy and most proberly will go over and have a look for him , im no expert but think after owning a freelander for over 4 years I've learnt a thing or two. lol

oil would spill out of filler with a litre or so over level, though wouldnt mean its buggered

very true

think my main concern was him saying about the extreme gear changes and changed with a huge thud

don't know if something like that could damage the ird etc

but time will tell

worse thing the guy doesn't know how he's going to get to work and may have to use holiday time in order to try and get this fixed

I know I wouldnt let the garage anywhere near the car again as they may have done it deliberatly in order to get a new gearbox out of him ????? , as to me that makes more sense in why this was done

think he's going to start with trading standards

Is the oil coming out of the breather?
Is the level-check plug still in place?

If they have no idea how to change the oil, I'm curious if they knew which oil to use.
I wouldn't be driving that car any further...

I guess it is.
If the box was "filled" with the engine off, the level would drop on engine start as the pump circulated the fluid around.
If so, fluid expansion once hot could throw the excess out the breather.

My thoughts exactly. They could have filled it with MTF94 for instance!

My auto box was over filled by the garage i used to use by a mechanic that no longer works for them. The 18m drive home coated the underside with oil it thankfully came out of the breather ontop of the box and about 18months on has caused no lasting problems.

I've blown the seals on my F1 auto by over filling. The auto case is made up of several sections. It's the seals between them that blew on mine. The auto was feked anyway as it leaked auto oil and this started to damage the torque convertor when it started to cavitate. You get a massive jerk as it changes gear when this happens. It's this jerk which I think distorted my auto's metal case etc which caused more leaks than the original as the case started to distort. Hence mine leaking from all 3 main case seals. I'm not sure if there's further internal damage done by over filling or other seals inside which blow.

Auto oil should only be changed using the correct instructions, which I posted on ere. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS OR DAMAGE YOUR AUTO IF YOU DO IT INCORRECTLY. I get constant questions about this by those who do the oil change incorrectly, or find their garage has done it incorrectly. It's an easy mistake many make and an expensive repair, considering it could have been avoided. Some are lucky and get away with correcting a mistake. Sadly many don't.

how do you mean made up of several sections, case is just 1 case

Hi. The case is in several sections. Using the pic below, the side pan to the right, middle section and the left section. I think there's another seal too. Would need to check on this. I think I remember there being 3 seals leaking at the same time on mine.
